Changing UK passport to married name?

Hey

My mum keeps pestering me about this (really annoying ), after we are married (I am taking Roshon's surname) do I just keep my UK passport with my maiden name or do I have to have it changed, or does it not matter??? Would I have to send it back to UK?

Hey Sam,

I have also taken my husbands name. As far as the passport is concerned, you can leave it in your maiden name but it would mean booking your travel tickets in your maiden name as the names have to match. It would also mean carrying your marriage certificate everywhere cause your green card would be in your new married name. I havent changed my name on my passport yet but from what I hear, all you have to do is go onto this website

www.britainusa.com and send your passport to the British Embassy in Washington for a name change. Its free of charge, you just have to send a stamped addressed envelope.

Where did you hear that it was free of charge? I looked at the fees on the britainusa.com website and it says to change name on passport costs around $150!! Am I looking at it wrong?

You can make changes to your passport at the British Consulate in the US. There is a charge for every alteration you make if you change your name when you marry then you will need to change your passport too.I'm not sure if there's a time limit to this as often you can still use the passport with a copy of the marriage certificate until you change it or it expires.

It would have been easier and cheaper to change it here, there is a provision that allows you to change it to the name you're going to have when you get married, before marriage takes place. BUT.........your timescale doesn't allow for that now, since you are a K1, I'd keep that passport/visa very close until you have gone through AOS............UNLESS you can get it done with a same day appointment at the Passport Office before you get your visa. Don't trust them to put it in the post!

If you have your passport issued with a new married name and you are not yet married it will only show a valid date from the date of your wedding.... as you are coming to US as a K1 (not married) you would be stuck...

Best just to have it changed once you are married and before your interview... it only took 2 weeks to get my new passport in my married name back from Washington and they returned my old one with my I-94 and I took both to our interview....
