I have a 10-cup Zojirushi cooker. They are a tad more expensive, but you cannot make bad rice with them, and you can eat the rice 1-2 days later.

Does anyone not wash/rinse their rice prior to cooking? By running water in and swirling it around until it is mostly clear? I once read that un-rinsed rice has more vitamins. And I also saw how they dry the rice in the PI, and imagine it's mostly the same everywhere. So now I always rinse.

I was put in charge of making rice one time... threw in 2 tsp of salt and about 1 tbsp of sugar in 2 cups of rice. She ate it, and said it was good, until I told her what I did. Then I was chastised for "ruining" it. (But she ate it!) yes.gif

I rinse all foreign packaged rice, but dont rinse all domestic packaged rice. That is my own personal rule, rightly or wrongly...

Oh, and, I trick my wife all the time into eating foods I prepare. I learned I just cant tell her about it. She doesnt like pork, so I tell her it is chicken and she loves it. She doesnt like bacon, so I crumble it up so fine she cant see it and she loves it. Dont like tricking her, but trying to feed my son things he likes, and my wife at the same time, without spending so much. Both are happy that way, it seems.... and me too, since I have to do all the cooking. Oh, by the way, I dont feel too bad into tricking her into eating foods since it isnt a religious or moral choice for her... just based on taste. So in "tricking" her it is just a matter of getting her past the mental and taste attitude she has. And if she thinks the pork is chicken, then great! Same with the rice. Dont tell her you added salt and sugar to it, and all will live in harmony.

I always rinse, as well as soak rice before cooking it. Soak it a long time, especially if you are trying to make sushi rice.

I prefer short or medium grain rice.

I've been making sprouted brown rice lately, we'll have to see how the fiancée and the boys like it.

I never rinse the rice (I do the rice cooking - its push button ;) ). Everything I read says to NOT rinse the rice. I never add salt or anything either, leave that up to personal choice.

What about brown sugar in coffee?

We mainly it long grain jasmine white rice at my house. My wife doesn't eat alot of rice here so a small pot is what she likes to use. Lately I have been buying some Jasmine Rice from Vietnam and she said she loves it.
