Hi all. New to the forums here.

I've started the K1 process and received the first NOA. I'm hoping things will go smoothly, I'm trying to read as much as possible. I have many questions, especially this one. When my fiancee arrives, how soon within the 90days should we get married and should she apply for EAD first after marriage or should we go with the AOS+EAD right away since I read the combo can be done. Basically, we've heard plenty of personal stories from other people in her country that have come on K1 but they waiting for MONTHS and MONTHS to gain authorization to work and also heard that some people their green card is very late. Just how much can we excpect the USCIS to screw up given that we don't screw up on our part?

You can get married anytime within those 90 days. Then you file for AOS. When you file for AOS you will also file for the EAD(work) and AP(re-entry when traveling). The EAD and AP form fees are waived when filed with a pending I-485 for adjustment of status. It takes 2-3 months to receive the EAD/AP after filing. Once the green card is approved, then the EAD/AP become invalid and are not longer needed, http://www.visajourney.com/content/k1k3aos

~ Moved from K-1 Process to AOS from Family Based Visas- topic is about AOS ~

She can apply for it after entry. It is usually best to apply before the marriage and get it in the maiden name that matches the K-1 visa. You can get it changed to the married name later. http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

You can apply after marriage and still get it in the maiden name to match the visa. Just don't tell the SS people about your marriage and don't show the marriage certificate. If you do, they might become confused and start pulling things out of their backsides about how you have to wait for your GC, so best not to confuse them with more papers than are absolutely necessary. After you get your GC, then come back and change the name and get them to remove the "need INS authorization to work" statement (or don't, nobody ever asks to see your card, so it doesn't matter what it says on it).

You have to get married within 90 days of POE. You can not apply for AOS until after you are married. Apply for EAD before you are married is a serious waste of money as it will expire the same day as the I-94 (90 days), and most likely wouldn't arrive until it has already expired.

1. Get married. 2. After you receive your marriage certificate file your I-485, along with the I-765 & I-131 (both are free when filed with the I-485), you will receive the EAD in about 2-4 after filing.

You can apply for the SSN before receiving the EAD or GC as long as there is adequate time still remaining on the I-94.
