Are there any photo ID alternatives?

The only photo ID I am aware of is the DL. My wife won;t be getting a DL for a year or so. We've been carrying her passport around for ID purposes. There must be a better option.

A green card is a photo ID (once issued). Also, she can obtain a State ID card from your state's driver's licensing authority. A word of advice, I would try to even deal with the driver's license office to obtain a State ID card until the green card itself is in hand (these offices can be notoriously difficult when you try to use alternatives documentation).

I took my wife to get a state issued ID card at the DMV about a month after she got here. She didn't get her license until about 3 years after that.

Filled the form for DMV today. Next rain day I'll take her over.

Must be a state dependent solution with different requirements. Needed a photo ID for my stepdaughter for domestic air travel, only way we could get that was to go to our DMV in Wisconsin, and show them her green card. Five minutes and seven bucks later, she received it.

Only other proof they would accept was her birth certificate showing she was born here, had her birth certificate, but she wasn't born here. Wanted to be darn sure, she was here legally.

In their home country, required to carry a country issued ID, got me to thinking about this country, really never needed any form of photo ID unless you are driving, more recently, air travel, or trying to cash a check.

Ha, when my then 14 year stepdaughter received her state ID, she felt like an American. Under 18 except for ID for air travel, didn't have to carry it anyway.

From my perspective, if she lost her green card, would cost me 400 bucks, but with her state ID, only 7 bucks.
