Volunteer work without EAD?

Hi everyone, I am currently adjusting from K-1 to GC and i have done my biometrics for AOS and EAD. However I would like to know if its possible to do volunteer work without pay while awaiting your EAD. I am honestly bored and tired of sitting around with nothing to do. So please advise if I am allowed to work as a volunteer WITHOUT PAY or if it will be considered a violation if i do.

I help out at the city's Animal Care and Control (transferring dogs and food between there and foster homes, mostly)

and I did receive an official letter from the City Council, addresses to DHS (including my A-number etc) to certify that

this was voluntary and unpaid, but highly appreciated, and they state they hope I will continue to help out after my

work permit arrives.

I took this to the USCIS office when I went there for biometrics, and the woman called her supervisor. They both said

this was "great way to get something useful done, get used to things here AND meet lots of people" ...

So, um, yeah, I think you can do volunteer work, just ask them to give you a statement like that, JUST in case there's

questions later on (during the interview, for example, or during the ROC procedure.)

Would volunteering to help out my fiancee's Father (he's a one-man business project-managing refurbs of private and commercial properties) when he currently doesn't have anyone working for him in this capacity, and wouldn't be looking to hire anyone in this capacity either, be acceptable.

I think what he ideally wants me to do is help him keep tabs on all his ongoing jobs, making sure people have received the correct building materials, going with him to check the progress of jobs etc. It is basically administration and helping him practically too.

I'm concerned that such activity could be regarded as something someone could be paid for, even if he has no intention of doing so? Any thoughts/advice?

I am bored and want to do something useful while I'm waiting for EAD. I filed my AOS recently and haven't even received NOA-1 yet, only e-notification that they received my payment. 

Want to volunteer at local pet shelter. Can I do that? They will only need SSn right? Or they don't even need SSN?

Volunteer at a pet shelter (non-profit) is fine, they usually don't ask to see any document to volunteers.
