Salaam Alikum, before any of you try to discourage me, let me first say. I am absolutely certain this is what I want to do. I do need some advice though. I have been told that obtaining permission to marry in Algeria is a difficult process. So here are some of my questions:

1. If I bring all the paperwork that is needed will me and my fiance be able to marry shortly after I arrive in Algeria?

2. If there is some kind of waiting period, how long will it take to be approved before we can get married there?

3. How much time will I need for my trip, assuming there is some kind of waiting period or approval process?

4. Will I need a new copy of my long form birth certificate? (mine was issued several years ago)

I am a female muslim convert, if that helps in the discussion.

As salamu alaykum,

I am going through the K1 process due to the difficulties in getting married in Algeria......I am also a female muslim revert, Alhamdulillah

1. They require a police background from the Algerian Government which takes about 30 to 45 days, during which you cannot leave Algeria.

2. They require an original divorce decree or eligability to marry, which we do not have in America. I contacted the Algerian Embassy in the US for advice. I would have to have my father go to their embassy to testify that I was single, then they would "stamp" the papers.

3. You do need a copy of your birth certificate, however it must be "stamped" by the Algerian Embassy and they will only stamp if you can get the State you were born it to mail it to them......

It was just too much for us, so we filed in February 2013 for the K1. We are at the final stages waiting for the interview to be scheduled. Hopefully it will not take long, inshaAllah.

InshaAllah, this information was helpful to you and your fiance.!!

Hi,

Did you get married?

Salaam Alikum, before any of you try to discourage me, let me first say. I am absolutely certain this is what I want to do. I do need some advice though. I have been told that obtaining permission to marry in Algeria is a difficult process. So here are some of my questions:

Hello,

Have you considered doing a fiancé visa? I married my husband in France, so I didn't have to do the paperwork to get married in Algeria. However, I did live in Algeria with him for the better of this year, and I know from visiting the local police station that the process of getting married there is more complicated than it used to be. Best of luck.

Salaam alaikum! Mahbrook!

First step is read this link to the UK consulate as the US Consulate had not information about getting married in Algeria - just about visa fraud - so just ignore anything that doesnt apply to you - https://www.gov.uk/marriage-abroad/y/algeria/other/algeria/partner_local/opposite_sex

You will most likely need from the US consulate an Affivdavit of Eligibility to Marry. Make sure to make an appointment before you go online! - http://algiers.usembassy.gov/notarial3.html

Other documents etc -

Bring several copies of your original birth certificate

Passport (get this notorized at the embassy) get a couple of copies

FBI and State Background Check

You might also need a certificate of residency -from the local police in Algeria... as I needed one in Morocco but not sure about Algeria.

You may need documents translated in order to get married - and it will be important during the visa process that you have used an embassy certified translator for any documents not in English - and that you get a statement stating they a certified translator from which ever translator you use -

http://algiers.usembassy.gov/translators_list.html

Second hire an attorney to write your marriage contract - this way it will hold up in Algeria in case you may need a divorce (note this isn't me second guessing you or your husband's intentions - this is me saying Allah is the best of planners and we never know what might happen in the future so its best to prepare for the worse case)

The rest is just flying by the seat of your pants and find out when you get there!

Wa Alaikum Salaam
