What do you suggest the U.S. do in this situation?

That is precisely what the POTUS is doing. He is asking Congress, and the nation, by proxy, what the US should do in this situation.

You need not look any further than some of the threads in this forum to realize that Obama will be criticized whichever way he chooses to go. The motley crew has been complaining that Obama has been ruling with no regards to the constitution, congress or [name entity]. He has finally called them to the table and asked them what it is they consider the right course of action.

As a result, sometime between their 45th and 150th attempt to vote a repeal for Obamacare, our brilliant elected politicians will have to make room for a quick vote on the Syrian crisis. It is about time the rubber met the road on The Hill.

Forget about the Obama hate for a moment.. What do you suggest the U.S. do in this situation?

Good question.

I would say we need to come up with a more realistic check-list (of sorts) which we should follow to deal with such situations.

If the present (or future) situation does not mean the points on the check list we should not engage.

SOme of those points might be.

-Does it directly effect our national security.

-Do we have certainty who did the gassing.

-Do we have a coalition of other countries joining the effort?

-Could the outcome of attack be worse than the gassing?

Go to LIVELEAK.com and search syria videos, there you will see soldiers cutting the heads off children and children cutting the heads off soldiers, you will see cannibalism and the most beastly acts carried out on anyone and everyone and from all parties.

Gassing is not their main problem.

Stockholm, Chicago, D.C. - IMO - city not matter -

That fella lost touch with reality ages past. So what if he shows The World yet another episode of said reality loss.

Just another day down in the Organizer of Communities Office.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I don't disagree with any of your points and I have some of the same misgivings about Syria.. This conflict is now years old.. Russia is supplying one side, and various Arab states in one way or another the other side. At this point we our hands are actually relatively clean. I would add some other questions to yours.. Such as what are the ramifications of taking no action?

I've seen the liveleak videos, I don't like either side... But even your response here.. You are not 100% committed to action or inaction.

We also don't know the full plan.. What if this is a bluff for the Russians on Obamas part? Bluster and prepare as if to take action and then have the Russians solve the problem (they can force Assad's hand and ensure no more chemical weapons are used). Certainly not unheard of - with North Korea its standard practice.

~~~~One post removed and one quoting to remove an offensive name, post returned to view below without the offensive part.~~~~
The red line Obama is referring to that the world has drawn is the Chemical Weapons Convention. All the green you see there on the map are the parts of the world that have signed and ratified or acceded to the red line. Yes, Congress has ratified the red line. It seems fairly clear to me and any other informed person that the world has, in fact, drawn that red line and made it effective in 1997. The question before the world now is, what is the world prepared to do when the red line it has drawn is crossed by a rogue regime. At this point it appears that the world isn't prepared to do any damn thing at all leaving that red line fairly meaningless. And that does put the credibility of the world on the line as the President has stated. That's not losing touch with reality. That is reality.
I am against it for two reasons.
-IF we do these things alone, we have become a powerful dictator on international matters, it is a bad present to set.
-We need to verify who did it.
If I can google my back yard from a satellite don't tell me they are not watching every inch of that city.
-instinctively I would like to set a standard of No Chemical Weapons..... but if we are the only ones who takes that stand, the "world community" is not as we have been led to believe.
Sure, you're against it for two reasons:
1) Obama is for it
2) Obama is for it
There are your two reasons. Try for once to be honest.
And the irony is that even McCain is behind Obama on this one... I think McCain made a statement to the effect that the bipartisan caucus would vote 'nay' if a bill was presented to them stating that sunshine is warm.
Driving home I just heard a few countries (Britain, France, Japan, others) made a joint statement at the G20 that something must be done with Syria using Chemical weapons.
