Should It Really Take This Long??

So right now I'm debating what to do with my AOS.

I have my employment card (recieved a couple of weeks ago) but STILL no SSN (applied in March) due to them miss-spelling my maiden name wrong, forgetting about me and my I-94 expired. I went back to our local office when I recieved my employment card but apparently they had no confirmation from DoS so I'm still waiting.

My GC and AP is another story. Had a RFE (husbands tax and Income forgotten in paperwork) which we sent back and they recieved on 1st July. Its been over the 60 Days I should have waited for the next step but still nothing and my AP is still in the initial review stage from May!

My husband and I are visiting the SS Office tomorrow to find out any new info but should I still wait for my GC/AP?? Everything has been going wrong it seems :( I cant even get a job without my SSN so my employment card is usless!

Any views would be grateful.

You can get SSN with EAD, and it should not take any communication with POE records. Withdraw your old application and start again with EAD.

Your AP is most likely on your EAD card. Does it say "Serves as 512-L Advance Parole" on the card?

Your GC can take up to a year. Get the EAD/AP sorted, you seem to have some confusion.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

Just checked my EAD and yes it does say that. I didnt know it could be on there so thats another thing sorted.

I have tried getting my SSN with my EAD. I think ive withdrawn and applied about 3 times now. Maiden name. Married Name. With EAD. And each time they turn around and say something is wrong, please wait.

After we realized they had spelt my name wrong and my I-94 had expired I was told in the SS Office to come back when I have my EAD or GC. I did. Then they asked me some routine questions, checked my passport again etc then she said "oh it looks like they really dont like you". Apparently my SS office hadnt recieved confirmation that my card was legit from DoS so we had to wait a further 6 weeks which was weeks ago now. When I go again tomrrow, if I withdraw my recent application how long will that take :(

I have a job lined up but I dont know how long I can stall without my SSN :(

Thank You

Your I-94 information should not matter for a SSN application with the EAD. Just focus on getting them up to speed. There really shouldn't be any checking with anyone when you present an EAD to them.

There should be some good info in the SSN forum; also I might try another office. Whatever happened with the K-1 issues should be over now.

A SSN application should only take a week.

Maybe you should try going to another SSA office to get your SS card. Your expired I-94 should not be an issue since you already have your EAD. I pray that things will go well with you.

We can't go to another SSN :( our nearest one is 40min away and the next one is about 2hours. Hopefully we can speak to someone who actually listens to what we have to say instead of sending us out with "you will have to wait"

Thank you

Social Security told me it is suggested to wait 10 working days after a status change (POE, EAD, greencard, or naturalization) to allow the SAVE database they must check to be updated. This was when we went in with the naturalization certificate. It alone didn't allow them to change his record, but they did find his status so all was fine.

So how quickly did you go to SSA after the EAD was issued? Once they say they will have to manually verify, it can get lost in the shuffle like your first attempt did.

After I received my EAD it was at least a week-2 weeks before we could actually visit. I might just withdraw and start again tomorrow as ive been waiting far too long now. I will mention the SAVE database as I must be in there now!

Sounds like you have the dummy office. Ask for a supervisor and be firm about it. Tell him the hoops they have put you through and that you want a number...NOW.

Social Security is a total joke. They combined my first and middle name after I changed my SSN to my married name then had the guts to tell me that my combined name was my name and I was wrong... lol!!

Anyway, they do send the info back to USCIS to verify your legal presence but it shouldn't take longer than 3 weeks to verify and receive your new card. If you continue having issues ask to speak to a supervisor but even they are not very helpful.

Sorry you're having problems. We had a long wait after sending in our RFE. The total process took 11 months (or 9 months after they received our RFE response). We ended up contacting our congressmen after trying to resolve things with USCIS to no avail. After 1 week from contacting our congressman my AOS was approved. I would definitely recommend contacting your congressman if you are over 6 or 7 months since sending in your AOS packet.

As others said EAD/AP is now a combo card.

Good luck and try to stay positive. I know it's hard but these things will work themselves out eventually.

Glad to know my EAD/AP is now one card (that was worrying me when it showed it still in the intial review stages) but if my GC does take a loooooong time how would I even go about contacting my congressen?? Im hoping that due to my husband being active military that we can speak to someone on base and they can help things move along a little faster.

I cant believe they told you that your own name was wrong!! We have visted the office countless times and each time we are told that something different is now wrong and now we need to wait even longer. There is one helpful person there who knows my case but last time he wasnt there so im hoping that he will be there when we visit!

It took my husband 7 weeks to get SS# after he applied. His name was one letter too long and it brought on a host of other problems. The ended up sending his application directly to the main office in NYC. From what I have seen here the average is about 2 weeks, but I have seen many take 2 months or more(because of name issues like my husband). Waiting since March is ridiculous. You need go to another office because obviously things aren't getting through to the people in the office you went to. Good luck

If and when you go back to the SSA, I would not say anything about K-1. Just tell them you want a new SSN and you have an EAD.

Were going to the SSA today so we will ask for a supervisor and say I want one today without mentioning K-1

Wish me luck
