so what should the steps be? we are in love and not doing it for papers. 3 years together and want to make sure everything is done right

The correct way to do it is to follow the K1 visa, she would then enter the country with 90 days to get married, you would then file to Adjust status, AOS.

K1 is one option - other option would be you go there get married there and file for CR1.

There is a guide for CR1 in the guide section, with CR1 you do not have to go thru the AOS process and the day she lands in US she is legal perm resident which makes things lot easier with everything from getting DL to opening bank account etc.

I think the best way is CR1, its a little long compared with the K1 process, but is less expensive. Your girlfriend (wife) will obtain in a few weeks SS# and conditional green card for 2 years;(to which you'll have remove conditions 90 days before the expiration date.) and everything suggested by Harsh_77.

The best option for you is to apply for a K-1 visa, with which she can enter the US with the intent to marry you and stay in the country, all done within the law. It is true that it will cost you a little more, but the K-1 is faster than the CR/IR process. While her K-1 is being processes she can come and visit, and stay as long as her I-94 permits.

Congrats and good luck!

The correct guide for a K1 AOS is

not what you linked.

The first link is correct.
