It's a shame that some religious people are so intolerant of those who don't share their beliefs. I don't think religious people are stupid, yet they're so quick to call me stupid for disagreeing with them. I'm sure God would be proud.

You make that claim because you define atheism by your own mythological beliefs whereas most atheists don't define themselves by the mythological beliefs of others.

I get what you are saying but you made a poor example, as there are lots of reasons for unbelievers to be concerned about gay marriage.

One of the biggest being our society exists as we know because of the family structure.

Gay marriage and where it goes beyond that changes our society dramatically.

I don't think it will change it at all. Rather than a man and a woman getting married and having kids or adopting them, two people of the same sex will, either through adoption or through a surrogate mother/father. The family structure doesn't change.

It isn't like being gay and living together with a same sex partner is a recent advance -- people (and even monogamous animals like penguins) have been doing it throughout history, in various levels of secrecy. The only way society will change is that it become more open to non-bible-approved ideas.

Generally, the people we respect as smart, or even geniuses (Galileo, Einstein, Edison, etc. etc.) are those who have been willing to question things everyone believed and try to validate them, or to find out the real truth.

I would say that someone who takes his life's instructions and determines his values based on a religious book isn't necessarily fitting that profile.

Personally, I believe in questioning everything and following the path you like the best for yourself. I take most things I hear with a grain of salt, and do what I personally think is right, based on my own values and priorities. It's worked for me so far. I stress, you take the path for yourself, and you let others find their own.

there's no need to take it personally danno. i don't just reject the christian god, i reject hundreds upon hundreds of gods - and so do you! you only accept the christian god, you don't believe in the existence of any other - correct?

the whole recruiting numbers thing and childhood indoctrination is not a concern of atheists. it is certainly important for your camp.

The reason is that some apply 'logic' when dealing with mythology. In that manner you can prove god exists using the same supporting arguments that can prove the existence of unicorns, leprechauns, Zeus, Chronos, Poseidon, Hera and the entire pantheon.

One easy way to send these individuals into a deadly embrace is to propose the following:

1/ I will be happy to disprove the existence of god, if you can prove first, that it does exist. You made the claim, you present the proof.

2/ If you succeed in #1, then prove there are no other gods besides the one the existence of which you just proved.

In some cases you can actually hear the echo of both neurons firing inside their skulls...
