Words are defined by their common intended usage, even when used improperly.

So if I were to refer to an Azzhole as a "jack-rabbit" soon if it became common to disparage people with this term, it would become "offensive" where as right now it means nothing.

Illegal Immigrant was actually a kind way to refer to these folks. Before they might be called "wet back" or something, in fact I believe the Govt deported a number of Mexicans south in what was known as "operation Wet-back" so it is possible at that time even that term was not offensive.

Bottom line- Changing the word does not erase it's intended use and soon another emerges.

my ex gf had a sister who is in the states illegally and every time I referred to her as an illegal immigrant it was like the bell at a boxing match going off.

ok so you are an immigrant here illegally.. ####### do you call them??? a foreigner who arrived in this country illegally and now has no legal status?? which one sounds better to you???

illegal alien.

I see nothing wrong with the term illegal immigrant or with the term illegal alien. The folks falling in to the category are immigrants or aliens and they are here illegally. That makes them illegal immigrants or illegal aliens and I can't quite see why that would be considered derogatory. Guess I am a little old fashioned after all.
