Hello everyone!

I have a general question about future applicants for the U.S. Permanent Residency: Some countries require mandatory military service for all males in a certain age group. Can you apply for the U.S Permanent Residency before serving in your home country's mandatory military?

Since the whole idea of permanent residency is that you are to stay here permanently, I feel like the U.S. would not want anyone applying for permanent residency if, even in the future, they may have the possibility of going to their country to serve in the army for a certain period of time.

Thanks!

Maybe you can find your answer by going to the DOS site and looking at what agreements our DOS made with those countries requiring military service.

We had to do that for other reasons, if my wife wanted to visit her mom, had to maintain citizenship in her home country so she could get a passport for that country. Otherwise they wouldn't let her in.

Here, if a male between the ages of 18 and 26 has to register with selective service the day he gets his green card. Takes a few seconds and can be done on line. Not that a president or congress would renew the draft, wouldn't last two seconds in the next election. But if he doesn't, will be in deep trouble with the USCIS.

Really don't know the answer to your question, but sometimes by posting, gets the ball rolling from someone that had this experience.
