BOSTON (CBS) — Boston Public Schools will offer free breakfasts and lunches to all students, regardless of their ability to pay, when the schools reopen Wednesday.

The city is participating in a federal program that will eliminate the need for families to fill out paperwork proving their eligibility for free or reduced-price meals for children.

...

“Every child has a right to healthy, nutritious meals in school, and when we saw a chance to offer these healthy meals at no cost to them, we jumped at the chance,” said Mayor Tom Menino. “This takes the burden of proof off our low-income families and allows all children, regardless of income, to know healthy meals are waiting for them at school every day.”

No big deal. I don't want to know what it costs to process all these reduced price or free meal applications each and every year and then you'd still have kids that fall through the cracks. What is a shame is that we talk about free or reduced price school lunches for kids which many children receive today despite their parents working full time. Address the ridiculous income disparity and most of these hot button issues go away.

Well lets put this "smarter kids" concept of yours to the test.

Q: WHich kids score higher on national testing, kids who get free lunch or kids who don't?

Q: As free lunch has become more available to the Poor, has the tests scores gone up accordingly?

First of all, there is scientific consensus around the fact that proper nutrition is essential to brain development. So let's get that out of the way right now because in my opinion, it really isn't the point at all.

The question is are kids who get free lunches really getting adequate nutrition?

How are we going to do anything but grow the income disparity.... when we keep importing tens of millions of 3rd world folks with little or no education?

Sure they are future democrats but not middle America.

Kids who get good nutrition do better in school.

Tests are BS. Too much focusing on testing just has teachers teach the tests instead of teaching things students need to know. It fosters a world view that we just need to know what it on the test to do well in life, instead solving real problems and working hard.

So I will say the kids who get a nutritious lunch are smarter.

School lunches should be good nutrition, and there was work to do so, before congress backed down for big agro and declared pizza a vegetable (when they had just worked to raise nutritional standards). But eating pizza is still better than not eating a lunch.

The majority of minimum wage jobs are worked by born and raised American white folk not by poor immigrants.

-Name for me the last kid who died from starvation in the USA?

-The poorer you are the fater you are. (statistically speaking)

-Poor people already are under the nutritional care of the Gov't.... why feed them twice (see point above).

-Locally we found 65% of free lunch claims were from families not eligible.
