K1 Montreal: Are tax records a must?

Hi Everyone,

We are gathering our stuff for our K1 interview in Montreal and have ran into a bit of a problem. My fiance (USC) can't seem to get his tax records. It turns out that the program he used when they were submitted used his old address, combined with his new zip code (he moved from PA to AZ last year). He tried requesting them and they showed up at neither his current nor his old address, which is his brother's house. He has had no luck finding someone to reach by phone and has submitted a request by mail with his current address on it, but so far nothing back.

Can anyone give us any advice? Will we be denied if he doesn't have this at the interview? He can bring print outs of pay stubs and an employer letter, a print out of his bank statement showing his tax return, and a print out of the taxes he sent in, but he never received anything back in the mail because of this issue.

I'm quite concerned about this. He makes way above the required amount, so it's frustrating to see a technical glitch complicate things..

Thanks!

he absolutely can get someone on the phone to take care of this, I had to do the same

tell him to give it another go.. without the complete records, chances are very great for a delay in order to have them submitted to the embassy

Could you tell me what number you called? The ones he found were only automated and he couldn't find an option to talk to someone. :\ That would be such a relief. I'm scared to even send in Packet 3 until he has it because of the checklist...

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Thanks, but that's actually what he already tried, with no success. It's been well over a month since he did that one and it never arrived at either location. Tried the phone number too. :\

Weird. He said all he could get was automated stuff. He ended up printing out and sending the form listed below for address changes, but even that could be a problem because it's a different address to mail it to if you're in PA or AZ. He wasn't sure which one was right for him, as he transitioned between both during that time frame. Been a couple weeks since that one was sent in, with nothing back. Although it's been a long weekend, so maybe it's just slow.

I will get him to try calling again tomorrow, I guess. Thanks for the help.

Has he changed his address with USPS? When we ordered our tax transcripts after moving it automatically sent them to our new address because we had set up mail forwarding with USPS.

He can go into an IRS office and walk out with them that day.

I don't think he did, but his old address is his brother's current house, so they just forward any mail that gets sent there. The issue seems to be that the address submitted with his taxes actually doesn't exist because it was a combination of a PA street address and AZ zip code.

I'll make sure we do that for any moves in the future, though! That sounds handy. :)

Worst case, I will. He said he'll try tomorrow, so fingers crossed. Maybe he just missed an option for an operator.

I wanted to thank you guys. My fiance was able to get his tax records today by going to a local IRS office and picking them up in person, as NLR suggested. :)

I requested 3 years of transcripts through the website and had no problem. Each year I filed from a different address because I had moved around a lot. One year I was in Utah and then the two most recent in NY. They sent all 3 transcripts to my current address without any issue.

Just to clarify: The issue wasn't moving. The issue was that his taxes were sent in with an address that didn't exist, combining a location in PA with a zip code in AZ. And it would not let him change the address.
