This post was very helpful for us too, thank you!

My fiance lives in South Africa, and we are currently waiting for the embassy to receive our petition so we can schedule a medical and interview for him. I just had a question about your timeline... I see that your application left the NVC on 8/23, and was received at the embassy on 8/27. Did the embassy email you or notify you that they received your case, or were you unaware that they had it until you received Packet 3 in the mail the next week?

Our petition was sent from the NVC to Johannesburg on August 26- We emailed the embassy on the 4th to see if they received it yet, but they said it still wasn't there. I'm wondering if it is still in the process of being shipped, or if it's normal not to hear anything until we receive Packet 3?

Thanks!

Here is what came in my Packet 3

DS 156

DS 230 part 1 filled out only

DS 2001 (notification of applicant readiness)

DSL 1083 (what countries you do not get police clearances from)

Supplement to form DS 156

In the email we were told to email back DS 230 when ready for the interview. I would assume since they also sent DS 2001 that needs to go with the email as well.

Dear Ms. Heckman,

Please find packet 3 attached. When your fiancée has completed these forms kindly email back to our office the DS-230 part 1 so that we may schedule an interview date for him.

Kind regards,

Consular Section Johannesburg

I went to CEAC and typed in the NVC application number using Immigrant Visa this told me where my file was. Once I knew the Consulate had it, we ended up waiting a week and I called and emailed them to check on it. The first time I was told they had it, but were waiting for the physical file. I waited a couple of extra days and sent an email stating I had seen some people being sent their Packet 3 on the actual day the Consulate received the digital file from NVC and could they recheck. I had our Packet three in email within 20 minutes. :)

That's interesting, we'll have to try that today! When my fiance called, he was told that they needed to wait for the hard copy, and that he would be send a hard copy of Packet 3 in the mail before we could schedule anything- I didn't realize they could email Packet 3, they didn't mention that! Maybe it's the luck of whoever answers the phone :)

We'll try soon, thank you :)

When did you apply for the police clearance and the birth certificate?

I heard police clearance take 4-6 weeks?

But, not sure about birth certificate since Home Affairs handles that.

We just did the police clearance getting ready for the interview, you dont have to wait for the packet to get it. My fiance just went to local police station and they put his info on a card and then his fingerprints on the card. They can send to Pretoria for you or you can take it. He just took it up himself. Took less than 2 weeks to get back. The birth certificate I don't know about. Mine got his sent to him from home in Nigeria. We knew when I filed the petition so we started on that and the police clearance from Nigeria.

Police Clearance from Ireland is almost out 2 weeks. Police Clearance for South Africa 1 week out, we couriered it to Pretoria and are having it couriered back to John. Birth Certificate we paid a company to get that for him and that should take a little more than 10 days from what I'm told. My thoughts are it will all come in around the same time, then we can get him scheduled for his interview and medical. He lives 13 hours from Johannesburg, so we have to fly him there, he's 1 1/2 hour from Cape Town, which is where he has to go for his medical, and the closet place for him to go to physically to get his birth certificate was a little over an hour away. Pretoria where the police clearance is, that's 14+ hours away from him :( So, now we wait for the slowwwwwww postal service to get in gear :)

Thanks guys! You are all so close! Hope the Birth Certificate comes soon for you mayheckman. If you went through a company it should be faster then going directly through Home Affairs.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi everyone- thank you all for the great information and insight!

I'm jumping the gun a bit because I just received our NOA2 via email, but I am trying to get a head start on everything. My fiance is from Congo, so sometimes there's a bit of a language gap and I really want to make sure he gets everything done right. My concern right now is the vaccination record. He doesn't have a copy of this, everything was lost when he had to leave his home in Congo and take refuge in S. Africa. I don't know how well they keep records in DR Congo, I assume not very well, so I don't know if he'll be able to get a copy of his vaccination record. I have read that the doctor can pull a blood sample and know what vaccinations he has and still needs. Does anyone know if this is true? Will it be okay if we can't get a copy of his vaccination record?

He has to go to Petoria to get his passport (after he receives his birth certificate from the Congolese embassy), so I think it would be a good time or him to get his police clearance done at the same time. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

From what I understand they can do blood tests to see what vaccinations he needs. They will probably consider that a complicated case, which will take longer than the 2 days it normally takes, but that's just a guess on my part.

Thanks. I will be patient and wait for the email packet from the embassy and email the civil surgeon.
