Citizenship! Solemn ceremony at San Jose at the USCIS office (not the main larger ceremony). Happened on 2/7/14 as planned. Only drawback of this ceremony is that passport office folks don't come to this, only to the main ceremony which means a separate trip to apply for the passport.

So turned below line red to update.

Congrats!!

Wow, they only give you 2-3 days notice before the actual Oath date.. We are going on a 2 week vacation and I have a feeling we will get the letter right then. Great.. Does anyone know how the Oath rescheduling process goes in case we need to reschedule?

Yeah, I was surprised myself (good kind of surprise, though). Now, on the fair note, though, they left us enough of time to react: the text message arrived on 02/06, while ceremony was scheduled on 02/13, so there is a week between those two events. As per rescheduling, I guess, it is not easy, if you will be on vacations. See what USCIS says here: http://www.uscis.gov/us-citizenship/naturalization-ceremonies

If you cannot attend your scheduled naturalization ceremony, return the notice, Form N-445, Notice of Naturalization Oath Ceremony, to your local USCIS office, along with a letter requesting a new date and explaining why you cannot attend the scheduled naturalization ceremony. Failing to appear more than once for your naturalization ceremony may lead to a denial of your application.

Sounds pretty harsh. But then again - after you will receive your text message, it looks like you will have at least a week to act on it.

You have a week if they update your online status and send you a text message/e-mail. I was told that sometimes they mail you the letter without updating your status online. Oh well, we have a lawyer that we are using so hopefully he can change it if we have to. If not, we will just have to come back early from our vacation. Gotta hate dealing with the USCIS!!! They make you wait for months if not years and you are supposed to stay home and wait for them to tell you what to do next.

Yeah, lawyer can help, if it would be really scheduled in the middle of your vacations. As per USCIS, yeah, it is really tough. That is why everybody is so excited about citizenship - it finally gets you off the hook, and lets you just live your life the way you want it. :)

Congrats!!

Wow, they only give you 2-3 days notice before the actual Oath date.. We are going on a 2 week vacation and I have a feeling we will get the letter right then. Great.. Does anyone know how the Oath rescheduling process goes in case we need to reschedule?

I would advice you to postpone your vacation after doing the oath. I've seen some people who requested to reschedule and basically your file is going to get put back at the end of the pile. So you might have a long time to wait again lol. I received my text message on January 31st, I received the letter on February 5th and my oath is scheduled for February 28th. So not all the time they give you that short notice. Sometimes they give you a good amount of time so you receive your letter and you get prepared. Good luck.

Weigh the options. We had them reschedule the oath but we knew about our availability when my wife did her interview and we made that request in person. It worked, they didn't schedule us till after we returned. However, you have very little time. The answer, after my own research (and discussion here and my own question on another part of visajourney, (See:http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/460054-postponing-becoming-a-us-citizen/) is that each office is different. San Jose worked for us, but I don't know what your office is. There have been cases where you end up at the end of the line and it takes months, maybe much more, even six months to get back on track. So keep that in mind. Is the vacation local? is it in the US? is it abroad? How much money would you lose if you cut it short? If its two tickets worth $4,000 in total or something, then I would take a chance and go through the process of re-scheduling. If its a few hundred dollars and a US vacation that can be moved, then I would consider that. My two cents after having researched the issue.

I just want to thank members of this forum for all their help. I wish more people who read, also contributed. I think I did a bit of both throughout the process (from beginning to end, i.e. starting with turning in the paperwork for my wife so she gets her interview in India till last week when she got her citizenship); I made a couple of friends and am in touch with them to this day (outside of visajourney). Again, thanks all. I will check in once in a while and continue to be a member here.

Oath Ceremony @ LA Convention Center:

I was supposed to report in @ 7:40 am but I was late was 25 minutes due to traffic and parked at the convention center for $15. It was't a big deal as they don't have time to ask you too many questions when they are covering over 3000 people. The ceremony started late because the judge forgot his robe at home and had sent for someone to get it. :)It lasted an hour in total and included 2 videos - A message from the Obama and a music video. They did not accept passport applications today which I was prepared to submit. It looked like cleaning staff were trying to sell passport and naturalization certificate covers for $15 before the ceremony. At the exit, there was a stall that was selling them for $10 each and at the parking garage the price was $5. I caved in too soon and bought the $10 ones :)

Oh, I did get a ticket 10 days before the Oath ceremony and was lucky that i got the letter in the mail to pay it off yesterday because they did ask if I had paid it off before giving me final verification approval. I had prepared an anticipatory letter explaining I had tried to pay at the court a couple of times but the ticket was not in the system yet so I could not pay. All's well that ends well.
