good.gif I like this poll coz it might provide a reasonable idea what is "norm" range.

I think many a fight has been had by many a Fil-Am over this. We've never fought about it but have had and still have, open minded discussions regarding $ going to PI.

IMO - It is a very good idea to discuss this topic thoroughly & regularly.

My family is not rich in the Philippines but they are working, that's why I am not sending money except for any emergency related reason. My grandparents said that I should save and spend my earnings to my family. They said I should secure my family's future. So I only send them goods once in awhile.

I probably just don't agree that husband should be the one save and prepare most for our future. I think it should be equal. I don't like the idea of keep sending money to your folks in the Philippines which often times make them a bummer and then when kids grow up and start college, have no saved money to assist them.

I voted. This is what I put....

Probably around $100-$200. Her parents work, and own a business, so daily expenses are not needed from her.

But they want her brother to go to college, which they won't be able to afford. Hence her contribution.

The money will come from her earnings. I am not rich, as I am a teacher by profession. But I still will be willing to pay all our bills off of just my earnings, so any money she earns is her to freely spend, as well as send to her family as she wishes.

We send money every month. And we send a lot but that's okay because the most important thing is that it is a "we" decision. I have no problem sending money to the family because they are my family to now.

We had talked about finances before she got here, she knew how much I made and what my expenses were. Now that she's here we make financial decisions together. Of course, she works now, but we don't consider that "her" money. The money I make and the money she makes is just "our" money. I always thought that was part of marriage.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer on this issue; as long as the couple decides together and they talk about it before the marriage. Just my opinion.

Well like I say, it will be her money. So in essence, I am just letting her do what she wants with her earnings. It gives me a peace of mind too, in that it won't stress me out whether or not she can find a job right away, as I have worked it out to where I can cover all the bills and basic expenses with my salary.

When we have a kid though, it will be a whole different story of course lol.

We've actually got more money from the Philippines than what we have sent to the Philippines. I certainly was surprised the first time my wife said we need to go to western union, I thought she assumed we would just send them money and it took me awhile to realize we were going to pick up money. I couldn't figure out why they were sending it but better to just let it be. I certainly don't think there is this rule you need to send money back, everyone is different.

Circumstances do change. My brother in law landed a good paying job in the US - working as a physical therapist for the VA - making good money in an area with a low cost of living - Alabama. He told his parents he was going to build them a big house, et cetera, with all the money he would be making. Of course, the money he was sending home was not enough, no house ever got built, and the parents complain that they are not getting enough money. Brother-in-law tells them he has his own family to worry about now, and the $500 a month is it. No more, no less.

I am trying to get the wife to send the same amount at the same time every month, whatever she decides that should be. But, she doesn't, so they ask for more, and she relents. They come up with new excuses, and she sends more this month, but nothing next month. Bad for the parents, as they can't plan their expenses, and bad for the wife, because she is tired of sending money home, but doesn't want to be an ungrateful daughter. *sigh*
