IMHO the US is a much less violent culture than the UK to an ordinary middle class person such as myself. In the UK the risks of being burgled (or "burglarized" as yanks would have it), mugged or just being beat up in a pub are much higher than they are in the USA. In the UK I would face the threat of real violence every time I went out on a Friday night, in the USA that's just not the case. Is this linked to the fact that people pack firepower? I think it just might be.

I live in a College Town and can tell you, there are just as many drunks here.

I guess in college towns there are a lot of drunks -- most towns in the USA don't come close to the kind of atmosphere you get in the UK after closing time, which is something I don't miss at all.

Yes, there are a lot of drunks, but for some reason the drunkedness doesn't seem to lead to violence like it does in the UK. I can't say way, but people just don't seem to be as punchy here.

i don't see a problem with guns to defend urself, i don't like guns, but if u wanna have one cool.. the problem is.. some places they have ridiculous laws for gun-ownership.. dang, its easier to get a gun than to get a drivers license... and in the news (even in this local tiny town) i read a lot of 'accidents' that happened because an @sshole had a gun and shot their uncles or cousins because they were mad at each other.
