Canada doesn't require a passport for a Canadian to reenter the country.

Just from the US. If you re-enter from UK or such then a passport is required, right?

YMMV

My daughter who lives in Canada is coming to visit us in Idaho on the 25th of January however she would be driving across the border into Buffalo and taking a plane out of Buffalo airport. I'm reading that crossing at the border (by vehicle) a passport is not required however would she still require a passport to fly out of Buffalo airport?

Thanks for any help.

 Where does your daughter live?

IMO, better to fly to Calgary (if you wanna be cheaper) or Lethbridge (closer) and drive across through Waterton/Peigan.

No passport required for a US domestic flight from Buffalo to Boise. Just a government issued picture ID

Calgary and Lethbridge are in Canada, and no passport is needed for a domestic Canadian flight either--hello!

She lives near to Niagara Falls, Ontario so she's on the east side of Canada. Her flight had been booked through Southwest out of Buffalo over a month ago. In the past when she's flown over to Idaho, she would drive across at the Fort Erie/Buffalo border and take a flight out of Buffalo.

I called the airline.

(and talked to this really helpful guy)

They don't make a distinction between Canadian or US driver licenses, so all she will need to board is her Driver's License from Canada.

Here is their toll free number if you want to confirm:

Wow! Thank you so much for calling on my behalf. I appreciate that!

After I had last posted I figured I would give SWA a call in the morning (honestly I did).

I think my daughter was planning to apply for a passport soon (money was a bit of a factor right now) but just in case she did apply and the passport didn't come back in time before her trip, I wanted to see if she would still be able to fly over without one.

Thank you again!

why not just get a passport? We've all known it was coming for more than 2 years already. Might as well get it over and done with. There's still time to get it before her trip.

I think the issue is money. Passports, regardless of what country you live in, aren't cheap. I especially think Canadian passports are a rip-off. They're practically as expensive as their U.S. counterparts, but are only good for five years and can't be renewed (as opposed to the U.S. passport which is good for ten years and can be renewed), and then you need a guarantor and non-relative references (none of which is required for a U.S. passport).

I'm not attempting to "put down" Canada or the Canadian passport system; I think Canada is a very nice country, and my fiancee is Canadian. I just happen to think that you'd get more "bang for your buck" if Canadian passports didn't necessitate guarantors, non-relative references, and most of all, were good for ten years and could be renewed.

On the other hand...Canadians do (in general) get their passports quicker than Americans. It usually takes two weeks for a Canadian passport to arrive, whereas it normally takes six weeks for a U.S. passport to get here. And it's not like I live in a far-out location either -- I live in Houston, TX (the 4th largest city in the United States) and there's a passport processing center here in the city as well. The U.S. passport office just takes a long time, that's all. I guess they're either less efficient or have more passports to process (as America does have more people than Canada; Houston itself has more people than many Canadian provinces), or maybe both.

If money isn't the issue, however, then I'd definitely get a passport and soon. As it's been said, Passport Canada will be filling up with passport requests for winter vacations. It'd be best to get in now while there's still some time left. You may even want to expedite it, if that's monetarily possible.

Money was the issue but she's going to see what she can do to get it now. I don't have the extra to send to her for it as I'm taking care of other business for her. She border hops alot to see friends that live in the U.S. (just on the other side of where she lives) so she knows she has to work on getting it anyhow. I've been hearing that there is a backlog so my concern was more that it didn't arrive in time and if she would be safe without it.
