Flying to the US on the K1 Visa

So I have my visa (YAY) and am planning to fly within the next two to three weeks... only thing is, flights are RIDICULOUS. I have a baby flying with me so with a transatlantic flight, even though he will be on my lap, I have to pay 10% of my ticket price plus taxes and fees for him too...plus the airlines are not my favourite!

I am supposed to be flying to Omaha which is relatively expensive anyway...SO

I am wondering if I would be able to fly to a different destination (i.e new york which is ten times cheaper) do immigration there and fly on a separately bought flight ticket from new york to omaha...

Flights from Manchester to New York are pretty cheap, easy, short AND fly with good airlines (virgin and british airways) which offer baby assistance and cots. My baby is 5 months old, though was 3 months prem so is a small 5 month old...he isn't allowed his own seat. I can't imagine him being in my lap on a bad aircraft with little room and no changing facilities for 15 hours!

I am hoping I'm told "That's fine!" but will it look dodgy at all? I have perfectly good reason, but I don't want to be flagging up in immigration!

Of course you can. There is nothing 'dodgy' about it at all. Wherever you land first in the US is where you will go through customs and hand over your sealed packet, so just make sure you allow for a layover that gives you enough time. To be safe, you might want to have at least 4 hours between flights.

Should be fine. I think lots of people do it.

I'm in the same situation minus the baby. Hoping to leave in the next week or two but flights are so expensive. I think I'm going to have to go Manchester to Atlanta or somewhere, then on to Houston.

You can enter the US at any PoE and then fly onwards after processing if you wish.

You can find a list of PoEs by state here: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contacts/ports/ so provided you initially enter at one of them then you can do whatever you wish afterwards.

They are ridiculous! I'd be looking at £700+ to fly from Manchester to Omaha with a less than average airline. Looked at flying to ATL first, but New York is much cheaper and the airlines are a lot better. I'd take a look if I was you, might save you some money!

Congrats and good luck! :D

and thanks everyone! Think I'll have to get booking these flights quickly then :)

I hadn't thought about checking places like New York so I'll bear it in mind, thanks. Hopefully going with British Airways as when I've visited my fiance, I've found them to be the best. I believe they've just started a sale too.

Good luck to you too!

My fiance came in through New York (JFK) and we live near Pittsburgh, a 6 hours drive away. They didn't ask him anything about not flying to Pittsburgh. But if you fly into JFK, try to arrive first thing in the morning. His flight landed at 7am and we were leaving the airport at 830am. Good luck!!!!

I'm pretty sure that Virgin and British airways have "bassinets" at the bulk heads. After take off they fold down and allow you to place your baby there. Check with the airline as I believe they hold these seats for parents flying with infants.
