Moving furniture , etc to US before I do

We are about to apply for our I-30. I am a Canadian married to an American. I visit him for weekends , usually twice per month. I am giving up my home here and moving in with my son to save money. I was told by moving companies that I can move my stuff to a storage facility in the US with no problem. Is that true?

***Moved to Canada forum as question is regionally specific from IR1/CR1 process and procedures***

As I understand it, no.

Contact CBP. http://www.cbp.gov

I tried looking about their website but essentially until you immigrate you're considered a non-resident so you'd have to pay duty on your stuff, if they let it go through. Most likely they will make you wait until you have the visa in hand. There is no saying you will be approved or given the visa asap KWIM? In Canada we often take it as a formality but until that formality has officially been passed, you're still just a Canadian trying to get your stuff into the USA to them.

You may be best finding a storage facility near you and stashing your stuff there, until it's time to move. Some moving companies may be able to do this for you as well.

Good luck!

You need to have a visa first. After that you have up to 10 years to move all of your possessions. I believe you need to supply the moving company with a copy of your visa before they can move it for you.
