I am in Istanbul and I have an I-751 extension but received the extension a few months after my green card had already expired. So my first question is that is the one year extension valid from the date of receipt on the document or from the date of expiration on the green card? My next question is that if it is from the expiration of the green card, is there anything I can do to get back into the US?

Are there any dates on the extension letter? When did you actually file- ie before or after the greencard expired?

The date on the extension letter is 1/16/13 but I was told that the one year extension was from that date so I thought I was good till 1/16/14. Also I filed after the greencard expired. So now I am worried that the one year extension is from the date my greencard expired which is 7/20/12 and now I will be stuck in Istanbul or have to fly back to Costa Rica instead of going to my home and job in the US.

the ticket desk at the airport usually can do a 'first glance' and let you know if you are eligible to purchase a ticket - no need to go through security.

IMO, though - you have a valid 'travel document' in your hands, for getting through USA POE.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

The problem is that I already had a ticket and was in line waiting to check in and they checked my documents and saw the expired greencard and said I can not fly to the US. Even though I had the I-751 document. The man checking at the airport said the I-751 was only a one year extension from the expiration date of my greencard which was in July 2012 and not from the receipt of the I-751 which was January 2013.

In that case is there anything I can do? Because that means my extension expired 7/16/13 and now I am stuck in Instanbul. I have an appointment this Tuesday at the embassy. The worst part is that I went to immigration before I left for this trip and was told everything would be fine ?. Thanks for the replies.

My appointment at the embassy is today and I'm really anxious. Does anyone know about how much time it takes to receive a travel document from the embassy?

What they told you???

I love you Charles forever!!

likely they are going give you an I-551 on the passport instead of issuing another extension letter.

One is not out of status while the I-751 is pending.

Foreign embassies do not have I-551 stamps nor do they have extension letters. The OP is trying to get special travel papers for LPRs who lack their documentation. I believe it is called a travel foil or something. OP: It will probably take a week to get the papers. Good luck.

AOS for my husband
