taxpayer number

My wife and I married this year, and this will be our first year claiming taxes together. Our purpose is to add a new proof to our case. My question is, is any way to get a taxpayer number since I live in Morocco and not in US. How can we get that number since I don't have a social security number yet. If someone had have this experience or know what we should do please comment. Thanks

Hi, I tried to get a ITIN, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number for my wife in order to get her on my insurance. The only way to get that TIN is to complete a form when you file your taxes.

I filled for the ITIN number and sent my passport with my completed tax forms in order to the IRS . Then send your passport back ., Otherwise you will have to go to the actual irs office in your state or get a certified copy of your passport i think. Mine got sent back no problem. But you will have to wait till next years tax time

it normally takes 6 weeks to get your number in the mail.

I tried to do this from Morocco for my husband filed the w7 with my tax return and it was a disaster. If sending the supporting evidence from abroad basically a form of I'd for your spouse it will be bared from being sent. You can't legally send an official passport from morocco or any state issued I'd... If you get a certified copy it won't be accepted as was the case for me. Trying to sneakily send ur passport is a problem as it is state property meaning you don't have the right to mail it anywhere even to another government agency, best thing to do is file an amended tax return when u join ur spouse in the states so you can add ur passport until then they will file married but filing separately. This was my experience and I have yet to receive a tax refund from the year 2012 as I applied for and was rejected an itin number for my spouse
