The beginnings of a little love story...

I'm Nikki (26, Australia) and I met my blindingly beautiful fiance (Tracie, 28) two years ago through a mutual friend online. We got to talking on AIM and soon realised how much we had in common. For months we communicated simply by text, which tends to be an icebreaker in itself because you can share your honesty and your heartbreak and your hopes and dreams behind the computer screen, and it wasn't long before we soon realised we were in love, long before we even had laid eyes on eachother.

After having graduated to phonecalls, I finally got the chance to meet her face to face this year in April. She was my Venus. Tall and confident and sexy and funny, the yin to my yan. We spent a very intense three weeks travelling her gorgeous country together, getting ourselves into all sorts of mischief and navigating the landmines of our both equally complicated emotions and sometimes questionable communication skills. If I could have become a bluebird there and then, to live inside her ribcage for the rest of my days, I would have been perfectly happy to sing along to the beat of her heart, but sadly, time left us parting ways, and I had to take flight back home to Australia. I've never cried so much in my entire life.

A month later, DOMA was struck down, allowing same sex couples federal benefits. Our binational love could finally be recognised on a beurocratic level, and we began to think about how we could be together on a more permanent basis, because (as you all know) while Skype is wonderful, that physical barrier is still one of the most achingly painful things two long distance lovers have to bear.

Tracie visited me three months later. I introduced her to my friends, to Aussie pub culture, to Vegemite. We made our way down to Sydney to spend a very indulgent two days exploring one of Australia's many national landmarks, and she proposed to me right in front of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, getting down on one knee and beaming up at me brighter than the sun.

Last week we recieved our NOA1 in the mail, and we couldn't be happier to share this journey with eachother as well as all of you <3

I know, we are both so completely in shock over how easily the stars aligned for us with regards to the changes in legislation for same sex couples just as we were trying to figure out how to be together permenantly. Can only hope things continue to remain easy - this visa process is absolutely terrifying!

Awe, don't let it scare you! It is intimidating and overwhelming at times, but you'll get through it! I look forward to seeing updates on your case, as I am sure there are not many same-sex couples who have submitted a I-129F. I am interested in seeing how it progresses, and I really hope everything goes smoothly!
