SSN woes

Darnell, is it ok to apply in VISA name (maiden) after marriage? Then change name after card arrives? Yes, it's an extra trip to the SOS office but maybe less of a headache to do it.

Yes, my wife applied for her SSC in her maiden name after the marriage as she was not going to change her name. The only way they know if you are married is if you open your mouth and say, "We just got married and..." Just fill out the SS-5 form, use the I-94 and visa and passport (we took along the BC just in case they wanted another proof for ID or age) and get the SSN in her maiden name. Then you can go back and change the name later, but the number is the most important thing. You might want to wait until she receives her GC and get her name changed and the "VALID FOR WORK WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION" removed at the same time.

Good luck,

Dave

The woman you talked to at SSA is lying out her a$$.

My wife when down after getting married, brought a certified copy of the marriage certificate, her passport with I-94 and a birth certificate. Two weeks later her card arrived, in her married name. I would be making noise and asking for a supervisor.

Both these links show that ONLY the I-94 is needed to apply. (other forms are acceptable but not all are required, just one of them)

Ya know - I'm gonna follow you - each time you write this stuff.

Why? It's #######. You're giving false hope to folk , leading them to believe that what worked for your wife will work for all.

It's not that way, at all.

You got exceptionally lucky. USUALLY, when folk apply in the married name (K-1 visa holders) within the 90 days on the I-94, a properly trained SSA staffer will send the stuff out for DHS Verification.

That was skipped, with you and yer wife.

I hope you realize how exceptionally lucky you were. I also hope that you stop repeating 'your story' as the gospel.

It's not the gospel. It doesn't work (mostly). You and your wife were exceptionally lucky, IMO bullying a SSA staffer to make it happen without the SAVE db lookup.

I ask you stop repeating your story, as it's not the way it's supposed to be done at any SSA office.

Thanks in advance !

You would do a whole lot better with your efforts to do a search of SSA and post the regulations and such that are fact so that when a new applicant is faced with an idiot at SSA they could present the "facts" that show their is NOTHING requiring the newly married person to wait for their GC before getting their SSN in their married name instead of perpetuating your opinion.

My wife did not "get lucky with SSA skipping a step" (which they didn't, he did pull information on my wife up on the computer), my wife didn't get an idiot when she applied, she got a person who knew the regulations and did everything correctly.

You perpetuate... that all personal at SSA are idiots and instead of getting the application done per regulations to get it done by "not fighting the idiots".

I would really like to know just what (you think) is SENT OUT to DHS that was missed with my wife's application? And secondly, is that same info sent out if applying in a person's single name? And lastly, just what information did the SSA personal pull up on the computer (verifying) before authorizing the issuance of the SSN for my wife if it was information from DHS?
