Travel within 90-day window

My GC expires in mid-December, so my 90-day-window for filing the i-751 starts in mid-September.

We have international travel plans in early-mid October.

When you file the i-751, is it similar to when you file for GC initially (no travel while application pending, unless you have AP)?

My thought was to file immediately after we return from our trip, to avoid problems. Is that enough time (about 60 days prior to expiration date)? I read that you can file at any point within the 90 days but that it's better to do it early on.

Your plan is fine, for the reason that you state.

you have enough time on your green card for your trip,but if you file the 1-751 in mid September about two weeks later you will receive a receipt letter that will say one year extension you can travel with that letter , in late October or November you will get appointment. letter for your biometrics fingerprints taken.as of now your good to go. safe trip

If you are ready, you can even in mid-September. You GC expiry date is still mid-December. So when you file in mid-September, you will get NOA1, which extends the GC validity to mid-December'14. You are more likely to receive this NOA1 before you go on vacation. So you have good choices to make.
