It's relevant because if he never filed to adjust, he would be out of status since his K-1 expired. This means after a year, he is ban from the US for 3 years if he leaves.

They can still adjust if they haven't because it doesn't look like they will be able to meet the financial requirements for her to legally live there.

For those two reasons, the question was relevant.
