I am confused about the whole EAD thing.

I have a SSN which says VALID FOR WORK WITH DHS AUTHORISATION.

I went to the social security website which says they only issue an SSN like that to people who have been APPROVED to work.

As I understand, that means I can work...

but everything I read here tells me I have to apply for an EAD with the i-765,

can anyone clear this up for me?

A K1 holder is work authorized for the 90 days their visa is valid. The problem is that they don't have any proof of this other than their I-94, and thus have trouble convincing employers that they are work authorized, and employers are techinically supposed to ask for documentation showing that they actually are work authorized (which they don't have).

It seems like most people just wait until they receive their EAD to start working.

You have a restricted SSN card. This will indicate to any prospective employer that you will need to provide separate proof of work authorization from DHS.

YMMV

Not true. You can work ONLY with the temp EAD stamp (received at JFK).

Most likely, yes, you need that EAD simply because IF you got the temporary EAD at JFK it is so time limited that a lot of places may not hire you since you'd have to quit in 90 days, plus it might even be hard to find a job that fast. Having a SSN does not allow you to work, your card simply means (like it was said above) that you can use that SSN to work only if you also have the appropriate authorization from DHS.
