The fact also is that all over the world people as much less paranoid than you. They live long and happy and healthy lives without any handguns or rifles in their homes or on their person. And the fact also is that those people are much less at risk of becoming victims of gun violence. All over the world. In every country. Even right here.

I'd bet those other happy countries don't have a 1 person to 1 gun ratio. Also, I'd guess they don't have a constitution that has a right to bear arms. I could be wrong though.

I'm probably the safest, most logical gun owner you'll ever meet. I am not a "gun nut". My life doesn't revolve around guns. I don't eat, sleep and drink guns. I don't think anyone is out to get me. I can go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and don't feel the need to bring a gun with me. I don't see the cars as a silly comparison in all instances. I'm logical and I see both sides to most every issue.

Exactly. Which is why it surprised me when you made the cars vs guns comparison. You're too smart and logical for that nonsense.

It is a very silly comparison.

You want a gun from protection from other guns. Isn't that f'ed up that you have to protect your house with a gun?

That's the insanity part of it all. It's like some virus that can't be stopped. It just keeps reproducing.

But Spooks, cars transport us and have ushered in a new age of traveling freedom for us individuals. Guns are made to kill things. Cars accidentally kill things sometimes when people or hardware f up. A little different.

Cars provide a service that most of the population needs, so the risks are overlooked and deemed acceptable. How about cigarettes? How many people have died from smoking?

Too many. A little bit different type of death but I think the comparison works well enough. I'd be for the ban of anything physically addicting. I feel like physical addiction infringes on a persons right to stop.

The risks are deemed acceptable because so many preventative rules and regulations have been put into place to lower the number of accidents. And that number is declining, and has been for some time.

By as early as 2015, the amount of gun deaths is expected to outnumber the amount of motor vehicle deaths on a national level.

It already has in some states.

Sure.

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2013/03/state-map-gun-suicides-traffic-deaths

This source tracks gun deaths (including suicides) and compares them to motor vehicle accidents.

It does it state by state and then nationally.

Here's the source that suggests that gun deaths will exceed motor vehicle deaths by 2015:

It also shows the numbers of motor vehicle deaths declining.

Traffic fatalities in 2011 were the lowest since 1949, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Although drivers in the U.S. logged fewer miles than in 2010, the fatality rate was the lowest on record, 1.1 deaths for each 100 million vehicle miles driven.

There were 53,524 motor-vehicle deaths in 1979, compared with a projected 33,975 this year, according to the data compiled by Bloomberg.

“In the past several decades, we’ve seen remarkable improvements in both the way motorists behave on our roadways and in the safety of the vehicles they drive,” according to a Dec. 10 statement by the agency.

So, ban tires, ban bullets- all is solved, yes?

Wait a mo - death by sledgehammer counts would increase.

Slacktards... Who really cares about this murder/death/kill stuff, anyway ?

Left leaning people tend to use left leaning sources, right leaning people use right leaning sources. Is this not to be expected?

Where's the letter that corresponds to the judging the source and not the material posted? Anyone? I don't have them memorized.

The CDC (where the info is taken from) must be in on this elaborate scheme too.

Here's another source for you to ignore.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/01/09/guns-traffic-deaths-rates/1784595/

Death rates from guns, traffic accidents converging

WASHINGTON — Deaths from traffic accidents have dropped dramatically over the last 10 years, while firearm-related fatalities rose for decades before leveling off in the past decade, a USA TODAY analysis of data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows.

Meanwhile, the rate of firearms deaths has exceeded traffic fatalities in several states, including Arizona, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Michigan, Nevada and Oregon, records show. The rate is equal in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

An interesting choice of words at the top of that graph describing the trend. Looking at it, "auto deaths set to fall below firearm fatalities" would be closer to what's represented in the graph. I'm also not sure how they can possibly predict the numbers 4 years in advance without the data.

ETA: Why is there no bar graph for "Traffic Suicides"? devil.gif
