I mean more the context of when a particular text was written. For instance, most of what is considered the Old Testament was compiled during and just after the Babylonian Captivity. Besides borrowing heavily from the mythology of the Babylonians and later the Persians, the remnants of the Israelites and the peoples they conquered, were having a difficult time maintaining their own identity as a nation. The former can be seen in the creation and flood stories, the latter in the teachings (and often insane rantings) of the early prophets.

So the mythology is taken a little from here and there then tweaked towards whatever particular catastrophe is currently plaguing a people. I agree. It doesn't look like they're able to change it now, hence the context invention.
