Hi everyone

Its been a while since I`ve posted here. Things have gotten busier since my wife has came and after 1 1/2 year of helping her adjust life here in America we are now finally determined to send her back to school. Now our situation is quite complex. She has a masters in English Literature which is the equvalent of a bachelors here in the U.S. We are in the middle of getting her transcripts evaluated by ECE but am quite confused as to what school she should apply in. Would it be beneficial for her to start at the community college where I went or would there be a better chance in her maybe getting accepted at a 4 yr university? Since English Literature is not recognized in the U.S she is thinking of majoring in Education due to her family background whom are all teachers.

Thanks in advance for the help

How is a Master's elsewhere equivalent to a Bachelor's here? From the couple of colleges I've contacted about doing a Master's here, my British (three year) Bachelor's is apparently equivalent to a Bachelor's here.

I think you have gotten some incorrect advise. English Lit is a major and in some Universities it is a popular one. What does your wife want to do with her degree? I really don't think if she has a Masters she should be anywhere near Community College level. Perhaps talk to a few more Universities to see where your wife stands in terms of her degree.

If she completed the equivalent of a bachelor's then she certainly does not need to go to community college. That is far below her level.

English Lit is a degree, for sure. Not sure what you mean by that.

If she wants to go to school, then she should be looking into a master's degree.

She probably has the school qualifications to be a teacher, she would have to take a state board exam. She could get many types of jobs here with her college degree.

First i want to start off with, I am not sure exactly how the equivalency company you are using will equivalent her degree and match it up with local collages. Generally what will happen is they will evaluate her education and assess if it meets the criteria for a Bachelors and if it does then that’s awesome. Next thing you want to do is apply for a Masters program at whatever collage.

In case she is not able to get into a masters program by just applying there is another option. Which is continued studies... it is for Collage graduates with bachelors degrees who dont qualify to get into a masters program.. Essentially you will enroll into the school as a continuing studies student if they have room in the Masters program classes... you will be given the opportunity to take the class. Now keep in mind you are not getting any benefit from this education yet, Unless you can prove that your grade attained in the class is competitive and then you can apply to be accepted with the addition of those classes.

(I just read what i wrote above it sounds kind of complicated) Anyways in short Get into the best Masters program you can at the best school you can be successful in.

With the education background of English you will be successful in Communications, Public Relations and Human Resource Career field.

Good luck.

(I use to be a Senior advisor for Students in the AP list that not Advanced Placement its Academic Probation)

Oh wow I did not expect to get such a wide range of response thanks a lot guys. Anyways in regards to her degree the way how Pakistan does is quite different. She has 16 years of education but her degree says masters of English Literature. I`m assuming that ECE will look at the number of years studied and not what it says on the degree? We weren`t expecting English Literature to be as popular here but based on the number of careers that I see for her it seems that she may have to do some further researching. Seems like we`ll have her stick to English Lit then. So before I have her apply should I have her wait back on what ECE says? Will ECE state on the document that she can continue with a bachelors or masters program? Sorry for all the questions just want to try to do things right.

I thought another component of ECE was in giving 'equivalents' to a USA school, evaluating what's what so the human could go forward in a degree program at a USA university.

You've not mentioned a USA University, so what will transfer, and how, in terms of equivalents, is sorta skewed without having a USA uni in her pocket .

I say - have her sit for the GRE exam and apply for a Masters Program in the USA. But that's just me. Is more fun hanging with the fellas in the Masters Program than some of the other fellas at a Community College.

In between her work and semesters in a Masters Program in the USA, she can learn more about teacher certification (how to do, where to intern) and follow through with teacher certification in the USA whilst in the Masters Program. That's a spectacular use of time, btw.

hi,

whotold u eng literature is not recognized in the US???

I have taken several Eng. lit classes in a 4 yr Uni as well as a community college.

It would be better for her to start off with a 4 yr.

My cousin came from pakistan and went straight to a 4 yr Uni in NY.

Any equivalency company will look at a variety of factors to determine what the level is. It's much more complex than just "years of study." 4 years in one place doesn't equal 4 years in another place.

Seems like we have more researching to do. She has 2 Universities in mind and with that she hopes to have ECE send her U.S credit translated documents to their admissions dept. I will have her apply next week and see what happens.

They normally also ask for the detail in regards to the course content and than match up with curriculum here and would let the school of your choice know which classes she already took could be used towards her credit.

Student can go to either one most students go to community college for first 2 years and than transfer to Univ as community college is cheaper compared to 4 yr school.

Depends on the country and degree. I think it also depends on the University and sometimes the individual student. For example a Masters in Arts from India is equivalent to a bachelors of Arts here (usually) but a Bachelors in Engineering from India is equivalent to a bachelors of Science in engineering here. There are international companies that evaluate degrees and determine equivalency.
