What are some of the things that a new immigrant should do after arriving in the USA to settle in.

What papers need to be submitted. What, When and Where?

What registrations need to be made.

What about State specific things like ID's etc.

What can those who recently arrive add to this list.

If all goes according to plan, we will be getting married a week after her arrival during the holidays, while relatives are still on vacation and off work. So wedding planning will be the immediate thing to take care of, including getting the marriage license here in San Diego.

Getting a social security card right away is always a good idea, as you can do a lot with that. You can always go back and change the name once married, as well as when she gets permanent status.

Apply for the AOS, AP, and EAD immedately after getting the marriage certificate.

Now on a more serious note. Nothing needs to be done right away, no papers to submit, no registration, no state IDs - yet.

After sleeping, apply for the marriage license, get married, get certified copies of the marriage certificate, apply for the SSN in married name, and if ready apply for AOS.

After about 10 days of POE you can go online and get a copy of the I-94, you will need it for SSN and AOS for sure.

Here are the top three:

1. Locate the vacuum and the cleaning supplies she'll need to clean your house.

2. Familiarize herself with the kitchen where she'll be cooking all of your meals.

3. Learn how you like your underwear and socks folded.

Apply for marriage license as soon as the cobwebs and jet lag as gone away. We applied for her SS # which I do not now advise unless you absolutely need too. Reason is now we are having to change her name etc on SS. And in some cases with her going through AOS, no record of her SS is in the office yet due to the process. Don't ask me why lol. We needed her SS right away due to rules I had to add her to my lease.

Then it is marriage time, AOS (adjustment of status) then wait again.

Here's what we did:

Relax a bit

Get married (about 50 days in)

Get SSN

Get DL/state ID (apply before I-94 expires, some states won't issue DL between I-94 expiration and AOS approval or NOA)

File AOS papers

Apply for ROM & passport in married name

Get GC

Set reminder in Google calendar for 20 months to do ROC paperwork

Set reminder in Google calendar for 21 months to mail above paperwork

And here we are now...

Thanks for your list. The points are well made. But, I maybe dense when it comes to acronyms, but what is ROM, GC and ROC?

ROM = Report Of Marriage (in Philippines)

GC = green card

ROC = Removal Of Conditions

4. Find a Filipino grocery (if you are lucky) or a asian store. She will need a good rice. Buying rice in those plastic bags at wally mart or your local grocery is a BAD idea. Trust me, you will hear about it.

I definitely agree with the above poster! Find your gal a place where she can shop for stuff she likes. Imagine being in the Phil. and not being able to find american food... If there is a Costco nearby, get her a big bag of jasmine rice. The biggest bag available. For me, a 2lb bag of walmart rice will last me a year. For my gal, a 25lb. bag of rice might last her 1.5 month. Also, a rice cooker - at Walgreens it should cost less then $10.

Best of luck!
