Hi, i'm new here. I hope somewhere out there can give me some help. I plan on going to Vietnam in December and get engaged to my girlfriend. We plan on just getting engaged (Dang Ky Ket Hon) and having an engagement party. I need to get a Single Status Affidavit in order to get it done. Can anyone tell me what's the easiest way to get this done or if I do it myself, how to get it done. I've been reading a lot on the the internet but it seems like the more I read, the more confused I get. So I hope this forum can give me a more clear and understanding of this.

Again, we don't plan on getting married....just engaged. Once I return to the USA I will start the paper work process for her to come here on a Finace Visa.

Thanks so much for your time.

My understanding is that you want to fill out I-129 F or K-1 visa( Fiance/ Fiancee ). If you want to engage then you and your fiancee do not need Single Status Affidavit. Engagement is what we called " Dam hoi" , dang ky ket hon is Married ( IR1 / CR1 type). Vietnamese people usually called Single Status Affidavit is Cong Ham Doc Than ( 300 dollars to get this one ) but this one is for marry.

Therefore, you want to bring your fiancee to US by K-1 visa ( engagement ) and will marry her within 90 days of her arrival to US then You Dont Need Single Status Affidavit. Period.

I believe you would get it at the US Embassy in Vietnam. There may be a way to get it in the US too. Here is the info I found on the Vietnam US Embassy site. http://vietnam.usembassy.gov/notarials.html

Edit: After looking I only found the need for the Affidavit if getting married.

I am doing Engagement too so I know for sure you and you fiancee do not need that. US will check your background which they know for sure if you are single or not. Dont confuse the word engagement with marriage. Engagement is dam hoi, marriage is ket hon. Someone had RFE at their interview because she said she did ket hon on this date ( ket hon is marriage). They asked her so did you divorce your last marriage yet and please show us your divorce certificate which she never had.

You don't have to obtain one since this is the engagement not marriage. On the day that your fiance go to the interview, she will sign a paper to prove that she is free to marry to you and she is single. They will check your background at USCIS. Dont worry anh
