What about my idea of giving life without parole to anyone caught committing a crime with a gun? That might work. Not as a deterrent, but simply as a way to keep dangerous gun toting criminals off the streets for the rest of their lives.

I think it'd be cheaper to repatriate those fellas into Cuba. Just a run to Gitmo, then give them a backpack with 2 days of food, a bit of medicine and first aid gear, and push them out of the west gate. Over time, say 4 years, Cuba would be a totally different place.

The original post was a felon using the gun which he should not have had in first place and how a guy with CC was able to protect himself and probably other ppl around him.

Ya, that's some #######, right there. 7 felony convictions prior, and what the heck happend to '3 strikes and yer out' ? Oh well.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I'm not dismissing baby steps per se. I'm dismissing laws that first of all, have a snowball's chance in hell of getting passed, and second of all if they do get passed, will probably get shot down by the supreme court. Even if they do get passed, I'd argue that it wont do much to change the levels of gun violence in this country.

I'm in. How bout we turn the entire state of California into a prison?

We retain the choice of letting Bill out if we want to.

Not the cause of the problem, no. I think responsible gun owners generally keep their guns out of reach of people who shouldn't have them, though.

I'm so tired of reading about kids who 'find' guns in their homes that are loaded and left out for them to grab.

There was one on CNN this morning. 3 year old boy shot himself in the head because someone left a gun somewhere that he could get it.

Just because people are legally able to own a gun doesn't mean they should if they can't even practice responsible gun safety.

I totally agree about the people who leave their guns laying around where children can access them. That is an irresponsible gun owner. But trying to make a gun owner whose home is burglarized and having his guns stolen the root of the illegal gun problems is ludicrous. Remember, the criminal is the one who broke into your home and stole your belongings. You aren't the criminal because you actually owned the things that were stolen.

Gun ownership carries a big responsibility. Safety is of paramount importance and that has always been my stance. I learned proper guns safety before I was 10, maybe even a year or so earlier, it's been so long I don't even remember.

Only problem is that it might be viewed as racist if minorities end up catching alot of these long term bits. Kind of a catch 22, isn't it? Stop the killing in minority neighborhoods, yet don't give out long sentences to minorities.

Right, so why do we allow anyone with a drivers license the right to purchase guns without background checks in a lot of states and at gun shows?

Not sure where you got that logic from, I was merely pointing out that irresponsible people hold some responsibility for their carelessness. Do you not agree?

I agree that people hold some responsibility for their carelessness. If I leave my home locked up and go out to dinner and someone breaks in and ransacks it, I would not call myself careless. I would call the one who broke in a criminal who has no regard for the law. Even more so if he steals my guns and sells them on the black market. I have done nothing wrong, punish those who did violate the law.

We both live in MA where one needs some type of permit to buy any type of gun and a much harder to obtain permit to carry concealed. It can't be done with just a DL. I really don't follow the gun laws in other states too closely to be perfectly honest. I know NH, VT, etc have more lax gun laws than MA, but that's the law.

It definitely will be viewed as racist. Sometimes reality is a tough pill to swallow.

Getting a concealed carry permit in Mass is a bytch. FID's not so much, but still difficult with any kind of record or restraining order. Vermont and NH are a piece of cake compared to Mass.

Personally, if you are a murderer you need to have your butt in jail for 25+ years if not an execution for taking a life. Majority of the black prisoners are locked up for drug charges that exceed regualr timeframes.

I just read an article about a woman who was busting for selling crack/cocaine. First time offense, 30 years in prison. You can kill a black person and get less time.

Laws are no good if every single person refuses to follow them. If you do some reading, you'll see that for every act of desegregation, there were large amounts of civil unrest. The first black man to go to Ole Miss had to be escorted by 500 US Marshalls and the United States Military just to get an education. And before then they tried to change the law just to stop him from going there.

In the town i grew up in we got our first black police officer in about 1976. even then it was a huge deal. I don't think the first. black politician came along until later, despite a large black population.

I remember in the when the schools first integrated. The blacks stuck together and all voted for the same homecoming queen. Just like that, we had a black homecoming queen.

Only the school board nullified the the legal and honest election, and made them vote for co-homecoming queens. One white and one black.

Sometimes I think those times were better in the context we stuck together and took care of one another.

actually she was busted for conspiracy , and hold over three kilo's and was a king pin of a major drug network.

Not quite as simple as it makes out, although 30 years is a little extreme

My bad, didn't read the whole article. I need to do that before I post.

Fixed, but not really relevant to the gun debate.

Murder or not, if you get caught with either an illegal gun or use a gun in the commission of another felony, they should hand out 25 years no parole.
