If they are storing their weapons irresponsibly, yes they are somewhat to blame for their own carelessness. Kinda like leaving your keys in the ignition with the car running while going in the store and wondering why it was stolen.

Yet the person that leaves their keys in the ignition is never held legally responsible for the car being stolen. What if the car thief uses the car in bank robbery, or kills someone driving the stolen car drunk? Should the person who left their keys in the car be responsible for those crimes?

Exactly my point. Usually that crime is the gun being sold to a straw buyer, or just outright illegaly being sold by a private owner. The other method criminals use to obtain their guns is purchasing them at gun shows with no background checks and them selling them on the streets. All 3 of these methods can be significantly reduced with stricter gun control.

I'm trying to gain some perspective of where you're coming from and how you have come to your opinion.

A) Of the 232,000 that are reported stolen each year in burglaries and other property crimes---what is your estimate of those that are not legitimate burglaries?

B) How many of the burglaries do you think are the fault of the gun owner for not properly securing the weapon?

1) And what would be a responsible way to store them?

To save you the leg work, I am not attempting to say that a person who stores their gun irresponsibly should be held accountable for any future crimes that the stolen gun is used in. I'm merely pointing out that they are irresponsible.

Thanks. My legs are already tired.

Just about all guns were legal at some point, even the illegal ones. They were legally made in a factory somewhere.

Right, so it takes either an illegal act by a once law abiding citizen, or lax gun laws to get these guns into the wrong hands.

If people didn't have cars, we wouldn't have a car theft problem. If there were no houses, B&E's would disappear. If there were no people, there would be no murders, no assaults, no crime.

But nobody's suggesting no guns.

Every criminal of every type was once a law abiding citizen. The Marathon bomber was once a law abiding citizen. Ditto for pedophiles. Whitey Bulger was once a cute little boy.

But nobody's suggesting no guns.

I was following the logic that if someone breaks in my home and steals my legally owned guns that I am the cause of the problem, not the criminal who committed the crime.

Not the cause of the problem, no. I think responsible gun owners generally keep their guns out of reach of people who shouldn't have them, though.

I'm so tired of reading about kids who 'find' guns in their homes that are loaded and left out for them to grab.

There was one on CNN this morning. 3 year old boy shot himself in the head because someone left a gun somewhere that he could get it.

Just because people are legally able to own a gun doesn't mean they should if they can't even practice responsible gun safety.

Right, so why do we allow anyone with a drivers license the right to purchase guns without background checks in a lot of states and at gun shows?

Not sure where you got that logic from, I was merely pointing out that irresponsible people hold some responsibility for their carelessness. Do you not agree?
