Shopping for a vietnamese in the US

I thought I would share this with you guys. Kim and I had the pleasure to meet one of our Visa Journey Member and his lovely wife over the weekend. Mike and Huong!

Well, put it this way, we all had a great time, wonderful Lunch/Dinner/Breakfast including: Bun Bo Hue, Sushi, and Pho! No Philly Cheesesteaks yet... next time! Touring the City of Brotherly Love was great for them and my wife Kim... although we live here in Philly but Kim has never seen the greatest bell of them all, THE LIBERTY BELL Finally got to see it! Happy!

We also helped Mike and Huong to shop for a few things we thought would be essential to a vietnamese, here is the short list, please cut/paste to add more items to the list if you like... I think it's a must needed list of things to keep your vietnamese wife from missing too much of her own foods and cookings.

1. Rice Cooker - Tiger 8-cups or 10-cups ($114.00) (prefered MADE IN JAPAN)

2. Viet-Huong "Phở" Soup (small can)

3. Bún Tươi (Vermicelli)

4. Bánh Phở (dried PHỞ noodle)

5. Nước Mắm "3 Cua" (Three Crabs or One Crab)

6. Jasmine Rice "Rose" Brand (25lbs)

7. Maggi Seasoning Sauce (soy-sauce that is)

8. Knorr Chicken seasoning

9. 8 rice bowls and chopsticks

10. Dried mushroom

11. Eggroll ricesheet (frozen ones to make the vietnamese eggrolls)

12. Regular ricesheet (Bánh Tráng)

13. Instant noodles (cup or bowl or package)

Not sure, the only vietnamese alcohol beverage I found here is "Bia 33". Wine was never found anywhere in PA, since we are a "Quaker" State, alcohol beverages are sold and controled by the STATE of PENN. Sorry Kimi!

We had the pleasure of meeting with Chuck and Kim, and we had a wonderful time. They really helped us out with getting some things that would help Huong settle in a little easier. Thanks so much!!! We have gained 2 friends that have gone thru the same struggles that we went thru, and it is so great to see what a wonderful relationship they have.

My lovely Huong will post her thoughts about the trip later tonight. I am sorry we have just been so busy. I don't know how someone that just arrived to the US could be bored.

Sounds like your wife's experience was very good. I think it is good for you to have shown her the bad side of the cities as she indicated. I also cannot imagine what she must and will go through being without her child. Do you think that is what held up the Visa process? Meaning, her having a child and not bringing the child with you....maybe the consulate found that strange?

Also, if it not too much to ask...we always get the Visa experience from the side of the petitioner...Mike, can you have your wife give her experience of the Visa process from start to finish, if you think it will benefit us all.

How soon after you guys got the visa that you were able to get a plane ticket for her? How much did it cost?

Lurker, it wasn't the fact that we didn't want him to come. It was the fact her ex husband would not sign a release form just to hurt her, not because he cares about the child. It is extremely hard for her without him here, but we are working on getting him to sign the release. The consulate wasn't concerned with this fact, they just wanted to check into her and her ex's relationship now. To make sure their is no relationship. I believe they do this with most divorced benefic.

I will have her post something about her experience.

Well, my lawyer said there was a very good chance that she would return home with me on my already scheduled flight. So before I left the states to visit her I booked her on the same plane with me, except the flight from Hanoi to Seoul. Luckily she got the Visa in hand 1 day before our scheduled flights to fly to the US. She had to take a flight 1 hour before me, and then we met up in Seoul. The total ticket cost was around $850 I believe.

While your honey is being interviewed I am sure you will sit across the street at the cafe drinking some cold ones, due to the stress. Also tell your honey to be very careful crossing the street after her interview. There will be about 10 people swarming her and stuffing advertisements for immigration lawyers in her hands. The consulate told my honey to be careful because there have been cases where their passport gets stolen with the Visa inside and they want big money to get it back. So please be careful.
