Thoughts and advice about our plan?

Hi all, I'm new to Visajourney and have learned so much already, so thanks! All the new info has helped my significant other and I work out a rough plan, but we still don't have it all pinned down. He's in the UK; I'm in The US. I fortunate enough to receive a graduate fellowship to study in the UK from October 2013-July 2014. We would like for him to be able to join me in the US as soon as possible after my graduate fellowship is over, and we've decided that a K1 visa is the best way to do this. From what I understand we'll still be able to start the process while I'm living there. Will there be any problems or complications since I won't be in the US though? I'm just not sure when the best time to do start the process would be either. We'd ideally like him to have the visa by the end of July 2014, but not too much before, just in case he has things going on with work and needs a few more months in the country to wrap things up before moving to the States. I'm just nervous about the whole process and curious if there's anything we should be especially aware of as we get started in the coming months. Any advice or input is highly appreciated. Thanks!

It's fine to do while in the UK. You should file ASAP, as it takes about 8 - 12 months to get the i-129f petition approved and then the K1 visa itself. His visa will be valid for 6 months from whenever he eventually has his medical, so you'll have wiggle room there for his leave date if it does come sooner.

As a student, you will likely need to consider the financial aspects. You'll need a US income, or assets, or need to find someone in the US to joint sponsor. Look up the form I-134, to see more about this.

~~Moved from K-1 Process to What Visa Do I Need-Family Based Immigration Forum~~

(Organizer hat off)

Welcome to the forum.

Keep it simple, your K-1 plan is based upon USCIS timeframes which are notoriously subject to change (read delays). Get married and file for a spouse visa.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Completed: K1/K2 (271 days) - AOS/EAD/AP (134 days) - ROC (279 days)

They'd need to wait 6 months from October which would cut fine for a July travel date, too.

But I do prefer the CR-1 route, DCF or not. It's cheaper and less steps.
