I went to college in the US. I was able to get a SSN with a letter from my school so I went on applying for a SSN. got the number after 8 weeks. However because of I was on student visa (F-1) . I was only allowed to work on campus for 20 hours a week. SSN card had " not valit for work" written on it. But the number worked for getting a driving license and all.

What should I do once I get my CR1 ? should I apply for a new SSN? or my SSN is still valid? will i be able to work?

if i have to apply to SS office for changing of status from "not valid for work" to valid for work SSN. how long will i wait?

thnx

The SSN is still valid. The number is yours for life. After you get your permanent resident card, go to the SSA office and have the work restriction removed.

Yes the number is you number for life it wont change.

When you enter the country give it a week or so to allow the systems at SSA to update, then visit their office with your old card and visa, or if you have it your green card, and request a new SSA card with out the restriction note on it.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

It generally takes a couple of weeks to get a new card, but I think the old card will be acceptable for finding work if you show it with your green card.

how long would it take to remove the note?

Sandy

Yes, I agree with john_and_marlene. Go to the local SSA office with your permanent resident card and tell them that the note should be removed, since you are a permanent resident now. SSA office can tell you how long it will take to get the card without that note, but I would say it should not take more than 2 weeks.

I-130 Timeline with USCIS:

It took 92 days for I-130 to get approved from the filing date

NVC Process of I-130:

It took 78 days to complete the NVC process

Interview Process at The U.S. Embassy

Interview took 223 days from the I-130 filing date. Immigrant Visa was issued right after the interview

The old SS card with "Not valid for work purposes" would not work for finding employment, however I am sure it will be ok for a Drivers License.

Once you are in the SS system you can change the card to allow you to use if for work purposes.

broma,

The SS card with the notation on it is fine for work purposes. The notation is simply a reminder to the employer to verify the person's employment authorization status.

Yes and Yes.

Also, substance, don't take you actual card into the office when you go to update your account. Maybe 'forget' it at home.

That way you'll at least have a SS card; you can use it with the endorsed visa in your passport as a hiring document until your new SS card comes.

My SSN still has that not valid unless authorized written on it. I am a Naturalized citizen. Your SSN still valid and u can still use it... You can get that writing removed if you go to a SS office . I am too lazy but never had any problems...
