Marriage plans need to be included in K1 application?

I'm getting ready to file for the k1 visa application. I'm wondering whether I need to include a marriage date in the cover letter? Do we also need a formal engagement before filing, such as pictures & receipts of an engagement ring? We have met the basic guidelines listed in the K1 guidelines section. Is it a bad idea to submit the K1 application without formally presenting an engagement ring or making marriage plans?

Engagement ring and marriage plans (i.e. bookings etc.) are definitely optional. Things you MUST evidence:

  • Meeting in the last 2 years (passport stamps, boarding passes, photographs, receipts for trips/hotels etc.)
  • Free and legally able to marry (divorce decrees where needed, letters of intent)
  • Intend to marry one another within 90 days of US entry (letters of intent)

Then everything else you will want to include is about establishing the bonafide nature of your relationship (communication logs and what not). An engagement ring is just one example, not a requirement.

Just to clear up any confusion, you are not applying for anything just yet, You are filing the I-129F petition and once that is approved, the foreign fiance(e) will able to apply for a K-1 visa at the consulate in their country.

Having an engagement ring is not a requirement for the I-129F petition. You just need to both be legally free to marry and have met face-to-face at least once within the 2 years prior to filing. You need to prove you met face-to-face with passport stamps, boarding passes, baggage claim tickets, receipts/bank statements, etc. Your letters of intent act as proof of engagement.

Be sure to research what evidence your fiance(e) needs to prove your relationship later at the K-1 visa interview though. You may also want to research if it is a good idea to 'front-load' the I-129F petition with relationship evidence when going through your certain consulate. For some it is best to do so.

No. Neither is a requirement. Remember they are looking, at this stage, of past data to prove a bona-fide relationship. Future plans are just that, plans, subject to change.

A marriage date is not required for the petition. The only place I've seen it explicitly asked for, is on the cover letter for the return of immigration forms to the Embassy. Of course, our case is London specific so I'm not sure if it applies to you. As for the engagement, we only included the ring receipt and an email from my fiancee's parents about the engagement.

Isn't it also listed at numerous points NOT to make any flight, wedding or moving arrangements before the visa is approved?

We sure didn't provide any date we plan on getting married.
