My fiancée will be arriving at the end of this month on a K-1 visa.

What are the rules for obtaining a state identification card? Can she do that right away with her passport and birth certificate?

Check out the Ohio DMV here http://www.bmv.ohio.gov/state_id_card.stm

It looks like she may have to wait until AoS to prove legal status in the United States, http://publicsafety.ohio.gov/links/bmv2424.pdf is a list of the acceptable documents.

you might want to chase after a SSN, 15 days after POE date, see

with a SSN, she's allowed to do other stuff, participating in USA 'society' - easy things like:

--get a bank account

--get added to your health insurance

--start accumulating credit history

Is the state ID card a big thing, right out of the gate?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

The state I.D. is not a big deal just don't want her to carry her passport everywhere.

I will definitely get the S.S. card as soon as possible. Everything should be a little easier after that.

For most states, the SSN card is not enough to get a state ID.

They want other stuff.

for K-1 visa holders, they look at the I-94 document and it's validity dates. If something is issued by the state, it's set to expire the day the I-94 expires.

IMO, not worth the hassle.
