SSN after marriage

I entered the US on a K1 visa and my I-94 expires on September 26,2013. We got married without applying for SSN and now I would want to apply for my SSN with my married name. I understand that what most people do is apply for SSN using the maiden name then get married and then go back for a name change. Is there a different process that I have to go through or any different requirement?

Any links for the process would be greatly appreciated :)

I suggest you apply in VISA name.

Once you have the card in hand, go back and show the marriage certificate, and make a name change.

SSA clerks are exceptionally slow-brained, and is almost impossible for you to get the thing you want, regardless of their brain power.

If you do insist on 'trying it your way' you'll be in for a wait, about 6 weeks, whilst the incompetent SSA clerks throws out an inquiry to DHS for 'DHS Verification' as they cannot find you in the SAVE DB under your married name. Tempus Fugit, and you're outside the window for eligibility (I-94 expiration minus 2 weeks).

File in Visa Name.

Go Get Em, and Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

You can apply for a Social Security card until two weeks before your I-94 expires.

If the SSA clerk doesn't understand this, then talk to their supervisor, or go to a different office.

Yes, there is a link: http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

Best is to apply for your maiden name, as that's how you entered the country with, and that's how you are logged into the system. If you apply with your married name, you may have problems getting a SSN. It's really not a problem at all to get a SSN with your maiden name, what is more important is to get a SS number attributed. You will be able to update your card with your EAD or green card then (just make sure that you file in the forms with your married name).

A few people have been successful getting a SSN with their married name by showing their marriage certificate. Some others failed. I would personally not take the risk to delay it. You will have to come back to the SSA office later anyway, to notify them of your change of status (EAD, green card). You can use that second trip to make the name change.

Does this mean that I am still able to apply for an SSN with my maiden name even after I have already gotten married?

Yes! More importantly, if you are chasing a SSN, apply in VISA name. Did you read the content of the links I provided, or no? If no, make 10 minutes, now, and read...

Am I understanding it right? That I can apply for SSN with my maiden name even after getting married? Which means I don't have to wait for my marriage certificate and just follow the guide here in visajourney?

I've read it and thank you :) I just wanted to be sure that I was understanding it right ^_^ Thank you so much for the reply. I guess we'll be going for it on his next day off :) Btw, there has not been any post on the fees for SSN application even on the SSA site. Well none that I have read. Do you also have any information on any fees Tahoma since you also filed in Seattle?

Another question Darnell, if I am asked on whether I am married or not I would say "I am married" right? What should I do if they would say that I cannot apply for SSN since I got married and have to wait for my GC before applying again? I just read a post that had the same problem.
