A Google Maps camera car was prevented from passing through a village in northern Thailand yesterday because the residents suspected the vehicle's driver of being a spy.

Dephrom Fufong, a 27-year-old Chiang Mai man, was briefly detained for interrogation when he drove his camera-mounted Google car into Phrae’s Song district.

The villagers thought that the government had sent the car to survey the neighborhood for a controversial dam project, which has reached a stalemate as local residents strongly oppose its construction.

Dephrom was forced to swear in front of a Buddha image at the village temple that he had not shot anything in the area. He was then asked to leave.

Dephrom said he was given a letter issued by the village head outlining why Google wasn’t allowed to show the area on its Google Street View service, Mthai reported.

I hate those Google Map camera cars. The villagers should have trashed the camera.

I like how they put the motorbike in front of the car as some kind of barrier.

next time they should send a driverless car with a monkey strapped into the drivers seat

They'd probably vote for the monkey in the next election. It would be a sign of good luck.

Yeah. That's cool. I am surprised more people aren't up in arms regards the invasion of privacy of Google maps.

People are much too busy these days posting their every move and their lives' every detail on Facebook for the world to see. That is how Google can get away with this egregious invasion... [eos]

While I'm honored to be considered for the position, I prefer the Philippines where my english goes over a lot better.

My memories from my visit to Thailand include everybody trying to sell me diamonds. A cute girl trying to lure me into a car

and a guy on the street that just wanted to look at a $5 bill and the look from a shop keeper that told me no don't let this guy

"see" your money. Oh yeah, ping pong balls
