Ohio gun safety instructor accidentally shoots student

(CNN) -- Oh the irony. An Ohio man was shot in the arm. At a gun safety class.

Michael Piemonte was attending a concealed-carry class with his wife Alison in central Ohio's Fairfield County over the weekend. Such classes are required for anyone wanting carry a concealed weapon in the state.

There were 29 students in the lecture-type class, Piemonte said. He was sitting in the front row.

While the instructor was demonstrating a self-defense techniques, the gun went off.

The bullet struck Piemonte in the arm. Even he didn't realize what had happened.

"Everyone was in shock," he told CNN. "It took me a couple of seconds to realize that I had been shot."

The 26-year-old said he's in good spirits. "I'm just glad my wife did not get hit."

The instructor did not return a call for comment, but Piemonte said he has been calling him regularly to check in.

"It makes me feel good that he is so concerned," he said.

The Fairfield County sheriff's deputy who responded to the scene described the shooting as accidental, The Columbus Dispatch newspaper reported. Piemonte doesn't have a gun yet, but was planning to get one this year. He still plans on doing so.

"It was the first time I've been shot," he said. "And hopefully the last."

Well in his defense the bullet hit a table first and then ricocheted into the guys arm.

The instructor owns his own indoor gun range and outfitting store so he's not going to get fired.

Because it perfectly illustrates how stupid laws that make people feel safer really are. "Well, you have to take a class to get your license. They dont just hand it out to anyone."

The only thing it illustrates is how lax the requirements and skill levels are when it comes to who can have weapons. These low level of requirements and skill levels are brought to you by the NRA and gun nutters everywhere.

I don't think a disregard for public safety is funny at all, seems you do.

I dont think anyone disregarded public safety. I think all the "well, you can have guns as long as the government approves" folks are disregarding the fact that only people following the rules are going through these courses and they do the absolute minimum to comply with law.

Bad guys - who are a threat to public safety - dont take these courses or get a license to carry.

I would refer to them as bad guys, but they're good guys in the eyes of the law, because they are not doing anything illegal by selling their guns without background checks at gun shows and selling them to straw buyers right at their gun shops or out of their own homes. These are your fellow cowboys that are legally arming the criminal element of America.
