The first Muslim elected to Congress is already under fire by conservative nutjobs for his decision to take the oath of office next month with his hand on the Quran.

In a column posted last week at Townhall.com, Dennis Prager had a fit about the whole thing. "The act," he wrote, "undermines American culture."

Apparently, Prager believes that Ellison should swear on a Bible, adding "if you are incapable of taking an oath on that book, don't serve in Congress."

Me? I find it offensive that so many people put their hand on a Bible when they agree to uphold our laws and "well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office". My mom taught me you go to hell for lying...

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

From what I understand, there is no requirement for any elected official to swear the oath of office on anything. That elected officials do swear on something, usually the Bible, means it's optional and thus you can use anything. I'd like to see a Congressman swear on his Chruch of the Subgenius pamphlet. "Eternal salvation can be yours for just $30, or triple your money back!"

So Prager's got his head up his ###, as usual.
