When travelling back to foreign sopuse's country to visit the folks, do you take time to visit other areas of that country? Say for example some Rand R to the beach? Or do you spend all of the time visiting family?

If you do spend time away from family, do you feel guilty about it? I guess the assumption would be that there is a family to visit and everyone is in good terms. Otherwise this question wuld be mmot.

just curious. :D

 umm way too many of them for my pocketbook. plus, keeping it "general" around here, the question assumed the R&R was a bit on the selfish side. You know, you actually want to take a vacation, not just visit the family bit.

Daniel

:energetic:

I'm actually doing the "meet the family" thing this month with my fiancee. We're meeting each other's families, in fact. :D

Hopefully, everything will turn out well. I think it will.

that is cool. sounds like fun. i guess the question for you would be if your family(assuming you are the USC) wants some R&R, will it be a meet and greet then take off to wherever would be an R&R place in Canada?

What an interesting question! I've thought a little about this, and I KNOW I'm going to have guilty feelings either way...

I'll be moving to St. Louis, my children (both in their 20's) reside here in Saskatchewan. My elderly parents, a brother and sister reside in Ontario. I have many friends here in Saskatchewan who I'm also going to miss dearly.

Firstly there is the consideration that we'll only have so many vacation days a year. Then what do we do? Spend it coming back to Canada? If all our vacation days are spent visiting family, then we won't be able to travel to other countries or even more of the USA! And, if we choose to spend time travelling, just the two of us, will my family and friends be hurt because I've foregone a visit to them?

I've worked here for 25 years for the same place, and was afforded six weeks of paid vacation a year, coupled with lieu time etc. I've managed to have several two or three week vacations a year, which was fine. Starting work in the US, I'll be back to square one...

I think we're going to have to find a balance. Time alone on a vacation with my partner is going to be very important for the nurturing of our relationship. Spending time back in Canada, visiting my children, family and friends will be nurturing for ME, which in turn is good for the relationship.

Wow, what a dilemma!

Just my thoughts!

you express yourself so much better than I could. But yes, that is exactly my question. Just curious as to how other folks deal with it.

From the USC side, I do not want to limit my spouse's time with her family. But dayum, when do we actually get some R&R?

Good question. I'd feel obliged to spend most of our time with the family, but would communicate to the family our intentions to spend some time alone. I'd be sure to include them on most excursions though.

My advice is to get Ana's take on it. If this is the first visit back since she moved, it would be natural to want to spend more time with the family. But that wouldn't necessarily set the precedent. If she's really feeling a strong urge to see them the whole time, I would let it happen (homesickness is a real drag and only compounded by having the chance to visit and curtailing it). If she's good with 50/50 time or some other fractioned amount, then let that be the way.

When we were attempting to go back to Canada in September, it was to see my Grandparents. Other members of the family wanted to come meet us there (a 3-5 hour drive from different areas of the province) because they knew we couldn't travel to them all (which I thought was fantastic of them!). Although the trip was cancelled, our plan next spring is a week doing a loop to see family/friends between BC and WA.

I expect that it will be tiring and not a 'real' holiday, but after that we can basically see to our own wants on our vacation stuff.

Are your plans such that you can leave some of it open-ended? As in go, see how she does with everyone and then whisk her away for a few days if she's good to do so?

Electricity is really just organized lightning.

When we flew back to Hong Kong in May (our first trip there since Lai immigrated), we divided our time among family, friends, sightseeing and travel. We spent two days in Macau, one in Shenzen, and a few others exploring some islands. We saw her family at least part of each day we were there.
