Good morning everyone!

I have yet another question.

Once moved, and all paperwork aside, what's the best thing to do..
Become a citizen, stay a greencard holder or go for double nationality?

I was wondering what you all did, will do or at least think is the best thing to do?

If your home country allows it, I recommend dual nationality. It gives you the security of being a citizen of two countries, the ability to stay out of the US as long as you want etc.

If your home country does not allow dual nationality, it is more difficult.... I would probably have stayed a greencard holder.

Our plan is to have her maintain dual citizenship for as long as it is allowed, making it much easier for her to visit home. As for the citizenship vs green card that choice will be made later down the road when she has that option.

If you wake up in the middle of the night and have to use the restroom, by law, you should be carrying your greencard with you. Your sponsor will be stuck with that I-864 for ten years, and that is only if you get a job, never know when illness or an accident may occur. Or if your job is moved to China.

If you live in a town with a population of three, your leader wants to double your property tax to build a statue of himself. Without being a US citizen, can't even vote no to this issue.

In brief, the only way to get out of bed with the USCIS is to receive your US citizenship, not only for you, but your spouse and kids as well.

With the Department of State, an entirely different agency than the USCIS, still part of Homeland Security, another bad joke created by Bush, but still an entirely different agency, the rules change. With over 200 different countries, and just as many different agreements with those questions. You may well find you have to maintain dual nationality whether you want to or not. If you ever want to see your family again.

With a passport to your home country, may be free to visit them, but they would never get a visa to visit you here unless they are millionaires. US no longer wants your poor. If you own property in your home country, may find you no longer own it unless you maintain your citizenship in that country.

And its not dual nationality at all like the DOS prefers to call it, it's dual or even triple citizenship, they don't let you own property or give you a passport unless you are a citizen of that country.

Just saying, no general answer to this question as to what is best for you. Have to go to the DOS site and see what rules that are already premade for your country, and also know the laws of your home country. There are already over 200 different sets of laws existing based on which country you are from.

And just like our elections, your choices are based on the less of two evils. Have to carefully weigh out what is most beneficial for you and you may not even like the choices offered.

You may even have free health care in your home country for the price of a plane ticket, where here, will cost your last cent and even put you further in debt. Another consideration.

But for dual citizenship, doesn't that also mean that you have to pay taxes in both countries?

This is why you'll have to look into the laws of those countries, some require it and some do not. As United States Citizens we are obligated to pay taxes no matter where we live in the world. You can have no attachments, like property or living family, in the USA but still be required to pay. If you don't like it you can renounce your citizenship, but that is a one time deal and is never reinstated. Some countries allow temporary renouncements or the ability to regain Citizenship, but each government is different. Though thank you for bringing to my attention something I hadn't thought about smile.png
