K-1 Approved in Bogota, where's the sealed envelope?

I read from here that a sealed envelope will accompany the K-1 visa to gain entry to the US. Is it going to be shipped with the visa via DHL?

Is there another separate sealed envelope for the K-2 child that was also approved? He'll be entering the US in a different trip and won't be with his mother when leaving.

By the way, how long does DHL take to send the visa?

Thanks!

No, you get the sealed envelope and you have to hand deliver it.

Don't open it or you'll have to pay a big fee.

OK, but the question is where do *I* get the sealed envelope. It comes via the DHL delivery along with the passports+visas?

It depends on what you told DHL to do. If you paid to have it delivered, they will deliver it to the address you gave them. If you didn't pay, they will have it at the DHL office you chose to pick it up. If the visa is to be sent to an address (whether to the one you gave them or the DHL office you chose) is in Bogotá, it will take about 2-3 business days, if it's outside of Bogotá it will take about 6-10 business days. Take note that this is not set in stone, so it may take more or less days for the visa to be delivered.

For the K2 visa, it all depends on what you told the CO during the interview. If it's a follow to join type of visa, someone will have to go back to the embassy for an interview and get the visa approved for the child. You have 12 months to do so. If the K2 visa was approved at the same time as the K1, both visas will be delivered based on what you asked DHL to do and the child will have 6 months to use it.

Thanks, Diana, for the response. I'm mostly worried about if this sealed envelope comes with the visa/passports via DHL or is there something that I missed. I don't have any sealed envelope right now. It wasn't explicitly stated that it would come with the passports via DHL -- but it has been explicitly stated on the link in the OP that it is needed.

ya, this stuff is sorted at the interview.

OP - are you the petitioner or the beneficiary?

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

The passport will have the visa glued to it and it will be attached to the envelope either with a huge paperclip or a staple. You can detach the passport (which has the visa in it) from the envelope but you cannot open the envelope itself. The only person who can open it is the immigration officer once you arrive. And what's in the envelope you wonder? All of the forms you sent when you filed for the K1 visa and forms you signed at the embassy with other things they had to include. The USCIS uses this to enter all of the beneficiary's information in the system.

Thanks for the response.

Here's a pic if anyone is curious and/or it has useful information on it. The "travel document" (sealed folder) comes with the passport stapled to it via DHL.

At the port of entry, the immigration agent gave us the papers back to search through because he couldn't find the I-134, Affidavit of Support. It wasn't there -- so it doesn't actually include everything, but apparently an arbitrary selection of papers made by the embassy. The immigration agents were friendly and didn't seem too concerned, also said it would not cause us any issues in AOS etc. I'd suggest to anyone doing this might want to have their fiancé(e) carry extra copies of the petition and/or supporting documents for the interview -- just in case their selected border agent is not in a good mood.

Also if anyone is interested on DHL shipping times in Colombia and is working on a tight timeline like we were:

August 08, 2013, early morning - visa approved at embassy.

August 14th, 2013, 3:00PM - received notification of the DHL Waybill number [checked http://colombia.usvisa-info.com/ multiple times per day, it did not show up until this time].

August 15th, 2013, 9:00AM - shipment arrived in Cali.

Total time from start to visa in hands was 7 months.
