I've been in the US for almost a month now, and I've been looking for jobs like a crazy person. Just for perspective, how long did it take you guys to get a job when you just came to America?

Wouldn't it be a good idea to identify what field of work you are trying to get into if you are looking for perspective?

I'm ideally looking for a position in the marketing/public relations field, but I'm also applying for minimum wage jobs in retail as I'd like to just get out of the house and do something. So I'm not asking for input from people who are in the same field as I am, I'm looking for people to share their varied experiences.

It is relative to where you live, in a major city, etc.... For part-time, it will probably take about 2-3 months in retail. Primarily filling out online apps. Go to job fairs, etc... Dont limit yourself to full-time only. Try like home depot, five below, lowes, target, hotels, Holiday Inn express tends to have positions. Also, most employers want proof of education, so hopefully you have transcripts from college, or a copy of high school diploma.

While I don't understand what anyones experience in a different State and different industry would have to do with what you are trying to find I guess there is some method to the madness.

Try Craigslist for your area or Carrier Builder for example.

I went to work within 3 weeks of getting my green card.

If you don't understand the so-called 'madness', you can try not contributing to the conversation. That would be infinitely better than posting a snarky comment that no one asked for

I also didn't ask how to find a job, so you telling me to try craigslist or career builder--when I posted on a forum asking people to share their personal experiences of how long it took them to find any job-- was pointless.

Your right this is pointless but I did answer your ridiculous question to humor you. You lack humor and I can see why you cant find a job.

Peace out.

I had interviewed over the phone for the job I ended up getting before even leaving for the U.S. and it still took three months before I got the job and could start working. I had to go to two more interviews in person before they ended up giving me the job. (This was for an IT job with a very specific skillset)

Took me three and a half months after getting employment authorization.

Being stuck at home without a job really sucks, but keep applying and try not to get discouraged - it will happen eventually. Oh, networking helps a lot, in my opinion. Good luck!

with my job i had to do a phone interview then do a face to face interview, then i had to a drug screening test(everyone is required to do it at this company) then they did a background check by speaking with my previous employers back in jamaica spent like 20 minutes on the phone with each of them. it was crazy. but its a great and big company filled with proffesionals.

I am in Oklahoma, and I work in the Accounting field. I got two job offers within three weeks of sending out the first application. I do agree that it depends on where you live and your field though, so everyone who is currently looking, don't get discouraged - it'll happen sooner than you think!!
