Why did you assume because he was black, had money and lived in the ATL he was a rapper.? How come he could not have been a prominent young doctor ?

We have a mega car dealer out here, Herb Chambers. He was a wealthy businessman before he got into the car business. He was buying a Cadillac at a CT dealership and was so appalled by poor buying experience that he bought the dealership. Today he owns about 50 dealerships and is one of biggest dealers in the US.

I so enjoyed doing that to Marvin

It's because I'm black. Racist.

How come when the clerk was helping the black guy instead of me, it could have been she knew him, he was better dressed, but when the clerk assumed OW might not could afford the purse, automatically it was because she was black.

All I am trying to get you to see is, it could have been something else, How many people do you know that can afford that purse ?

Maybe some idiot wrote the Nai thing on the statue of Jackie R and had no idea who he was ?

2 or 3 years ago we took a work trip to see a Braves game. Several of my workers ( younger black guys) and I were walking around. I was showing them the spot hammering Hank hit 715. They had no idea who Hank Arron was.

Gary, I don't know but this might be a shocker to you. Sharpton and Jesse doesn't represent the whole black race.

They certainly don't represent me though I'm not an African American. I do understand some of their concern and share them but please don't assume that we all drink the Koolade.

I think what we have here is another fresh example of how European countries (and people) are held to a higher standard.

Now I know many here like me have traveled and would know that a an unknown Black woman, alone, moderately dressed (all according to Oprah)

in many parts of the world

would more than likely not have even been shown the "lesser" costing bag in such a high-end shop.

BUt because it happens in a "place that should know better" everyone gets heartburn.

America is a unique place where even even using perceived income level to judge a customers ability to make a purchase is frowned upon.

I was outright turned away from even entering a store once, in Moscow, it was an antique--collectables store and the security guy told me "i don't need to come in." I pressed him a bit, I thought maybe there was a misunderstanding but he just kind of stood there blocking the door.

There was no logical reason for being turned away, if I were Black I would no doubt be convinced that was the reason.

Q: If the sales lady knew who Oprah was, would she not have shown her the bag?

Is it reasonable to assume the lady did not want the sale?

Or did she simply assume due to her appearance she might not be able to afford it.

It was more about her perceived ability to buy than race.

Race was simply an indicator as were other circumstances.

Quite a few. Since I know officers and high ranking enlisted, they could save up a few months and get that purse. Heck I could get it if I wanted it bad enough. And in your case, the clerk should have taken care of you first if you were in there first. I don't assume anything, I've been in customer service for 20 years.

My point is what is it about her that made the clerk tell her she couldn't afford it? She wasn't dressed like a bum(she was there for Tina Turner's wedding), she asked the clerk 3 times to see the purse and was told it was too expensive. If a sales clerk is going to haggle you down, it has to come from you. Not from them.

I agree with you. I have only ever watched two of OW's shows in my life so if she showed up in a restaurant that I was dining in incognito I would have no idea who she is. She is being a diva IMHO.

Hell in Japan high school students carry LV wallets and not any self respecting doctor.

I think the assistant was more guilty of being a snob, rather than a racist

What woman working at a shop that sells that kind of merchandise doesn't want a sale? You're making silly excuses. And no one answered my question. What is it about Oprah that says she couldn't afford it? You act as if she went in there with flip flops and a tank top. But I know you tend to always believe that about us.

Maybe the store you were trying to get in was a privately owned store that only sold to a certain clientele. This was a public store. If you were black, you would laugh at the stuff you post here daily.

When was the last time a white actor/actress has been denied sale anywhere in the world? I've looked and I can't find it. And if you look at the video, Oprah didn't want to use her clout, she wanted the woman to sell her the bag without having to explain who she was. She is a customer, if the lady doesn't want to sell the bag, get another job.

An actor or actress has a wider audience internationally than Oprah. In many parts of the world nobody knows who she is. When royals etc enter a store they generally have an entourage. This is Switzerland, where many royals congregate. The shop assistant probably thought she was a mere middle class customer . This is not about race per se.
