Hi all!

I have a question about requesting a work permit (I-765) with my AOS forms.

As far as I know, I need to submit a medical report + vaccination record with my AOS form, AND, I can also apply for a work permit (so I can work) during the time my AOS process.

My situation:

Cannot work at the moment, no health insurance, lost vaccination record.

Also heard:

USCIS will just send you a notice to request more evidence on what they need and is missing from the package you send in.

I understand that it would be best to submit your medical exam + vaccination record along with the AOS package, just so there will be less delay for the AOS application, but after we visited the doctor and local health department, it would cost us a lot of money and about a month in delay, just to get the medical exam and all the vaccination done.

My question is:

Do I need to submit my medical exam + vaccination record in order to get the work permit?

Just want to start working again ASAP so I can pay for everything.

Does anyone have experience of getting their work permit before submitting their medical exam + vaccination record for the AOS application?

Any recommendations and help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

It is highly recommended that you get your medical exam as I am sure there is a concensus on this site that if you send in AOS/EAD/AP and you get an RFE for your AOS that it could prevent you from getting the EAD/AP until you have sent in a response to your RFE. I would get the medical exam done first before even sending in the paperwork.

Yeah, that makes sense, I was just thinking if there could be any alternatives since I want to start working again sooner.

Kinda freaked out when the nurse told me it would take another month just to get all the vaccination done again.

Thanks for helping!

What visa did you enter the US with? The medical requirement is not the same for those that entered with a family based visa. If you entered with a work, student or tourist visa, then you need to see a civil surgeon for an I-693 and send it at the same time as all the other AOS paperwork.

Not sure why it would take you a month to get your vaccinations and I-693 filled out. I got mine done with vaccinations, x-ray (for TB test) within 1 week. I'm in Texas and I got my vaccination results same time as my appointment, took the results back to the Civil Surgeon and they gave me the sealed I-693 form. You can also try your state health dept. for cost effective vaccines. This is assuming that your AOS is from VISA, WVP or the like.

I would suggest you send the complete application package with the I-693 at the same time. If you wait to be RFE'd, there's no telling how long you'd have to wait to get a response on it. Not worth the risk in my opinion.

I entered with student visa, so in my case, I need the medical exam.

I was surprised when the nurse told me it needs that long as well, according to her, some vaccination, like Hib A + Hib B, needs to be injected over a period of time ( a shot per week, 3 shots in total). I really hate myself for losing my vaccination record now...

Plus, school is starting soon so the public health dept. is filled with kids waiting to get vaccinated, and the doctor I know of that charges the least is on vacation. Overall, just bad luck in my case.

But like everyone suggested and all the researches I have done, it is true that it's best to wait till everything is ready (including medical exam, which is the only thing I need right now) is the best way.

There are only certain vaccinations you need for AOS. Call around. Some civil surgeons are better than others. Here is the chart for what is required for AOS by age > http://www.cdc.gov/immigrantrefugeehealth/exams/ti/civil/vaccination-civil-technical-instructions.html#tbl1

"I entered with student visa, so in my case, I need the medical exam. "

Did you have to submit a immunization record before you started school for your F1 (student visa)? You can just get a copy of that from student services. I remember I had to give my University that in order to be able to register for classes. Not sure if that has changed. I doubt it. I just called my University recently and got a copy of my immunization record from them and gave that to the civil surgeon who then transferred it on to my forms and signed it. She conducted some tests too, like TB etc. But it was included in the cost.

Also depending on what state you are in, the State health department sometimes applies these vaccinations for free. Check your local health department.
